Location: Chicago, Illinois – Rush University Medical Center, Patient Access-Pre-Visit department
About the role
The Financial Counselor is responsible for securing payment for Transplant, Psychiatric, and rehabilitative services. You will provide excellent customer service to patients and both internal and external clients, performing financial counseling to help patients and responsible parties identify payment sources. This role exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.
Schedule
- Full Time (0.9–1.0 FTE)
- Shift 1: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, 8-hour shifts
Pay
Pay range: $18.87 – $29.73 per hour. Rush salaries are determined by factors including education, job-related experience, skills, and internal equity, as well as industry-specific market data. Offers may vary based on individual circumstances.

Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Two years of previous experience in a medical healthcare environment
- Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in securing governmental and non-governmental accounts for payment
- Working knowledge of creating and maintaining spreadsheet-based reports

Responsibilities
- Identify and counsel potential and repeat/recurring bad debt patients to prevent the rendering of non-urgent care services
- Offer payment options to patients based on policy and procedure
- Identify potential charity and grant patients, assist with completing eligibility applications, make eligibility determinations (up to $5,000 in actual or estimated charges), and notify patients of decisions
- Make patient payment arrangements and investigate additional payment sources
- Accept payments and serve as a customer service resource for walk-in patients in the hospital lobby/patient registration area
- Handle customer service phone calls pertaining to prospective services and in-house patients
- Provide price estimates to patients, physician offices, and ancillary departments
- Complete cross-training to become a Registration Specialist
- Complete daily and weekly volume/productivity management reporting
- Participate in and assist with quality management processes
- Ensure 100% of accounts requiring patient payment arrangements have a payment schedule in place prior to the end of the "Bill Hold" period
- Maintain a 90% resolution rate for customer service calls at the time of receipt
- Support supervisor/manager in reviewing work queues of accounts and various reports
