About the Role

We are a founder-owned luxury transportation company operating an asset-light model across multiple entities and states. We’re seeking a Controller with deep technical accounting expertise, proven process optimization skills, and the drive to build infrastructure supporting our next growth stage. You will report directly to the CFO and collaborate closely with an established accounting team familiar with the business. We value a technical accounting partner who can own the close, lead audit relationships, and implement structured processes where needed. Autonomy is earned quickly here—expect a structured ramp-up followed by the freedom to run.

Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting & Close Management
    • Own the full monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, driving continuous improvement in timelines and accuracy.
    • Prepare and present US GAAP-compliant financial statements, focusing on revenue recognition across service types, multi-entity consolidation, and contractor/vendor accounting.
    • Build and maintain accounting policy documentation, codifying institutional knowledge and practices.
    • Produce management reporting that provides clear, actionable insights—narrative-driven, not just numbers.
  • General Ledger & Internal Controls
    • Maintain and improve the general ledger in Workday Financials, including the chart of accounts, intercompany entries, and elimination processes across multiple entities.
    • Assess internal controls and develop a practical, right-sized framework that protects the company without creating bureaucracy.
    • Identify and implement process improvements, leveraging automation, AI-assisted tools, and Workday’s native capabilities to streamline reconciliations, close tasks, and reporting workflows.
  • External Audit & Tax Coordination
    • Serve as the primary contact for external auditors, managing the audit timeline, preparing schedules, and resolving questions efficiently.
    • Coordinate with outside tax advisors on federal and multi-state filings, ensuring clean, timely data and proactively flagging tax-relevant transactions.
    • Prepare support for the founder’s related entities, collaborating with external advisors as needed.
  • Team Leadership & Development
    • Lead a team of 1–3 accounting professionals, setting clear expectations, developing skills, and building on existing strengths to handle growth without adding headcount.
    • Foster a culture of accuracy, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
  • Technology & Process Modernization
    • Serve as the functional owner of Workday Financials from an accounting perspective, partnering with IT and operations to optimize configuration, reporting, and integrations.
    • Stay current on AI and automation trends in accounting, identifying opportunities to replace manual processes with technology.
    • Evaluate and recommend complementary tools for expense management, AP automation, close management, or analytics to reduce repetitive work.

Requirements

  • Required:
    • Active CPA license.
    • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including external audit and a corporate/industry Controller or senior accounting role.
    • Deep US GAAP knowledge, particularly revenue recognition (ASC 606), multi-entity consolidations, and intercompany accounting.
    • Hands-on experience managing a monthly close process end-to-end and serving as the primary audit liaison.
    • Direct, organized, and development-oriented management style with a focus on accountability and growth.
  • Strongly Preferred:
    • Experience in services, transportation, or other asset-light business models.
    • Working knowledge of Workday Financials, including module configuration, report building, and integration management.
    • Exposure to founder-owned or closely held private companies, with an understanding of related-entity dynamics.
    • ERP system experience at an administrative or power-user level (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Sage Intacct).
    • Multi-entity and multi-state accounting experience, including consolidation complexity and varied compliance requirements.
    • Demonstrated comfort with technology modernization, such as leading ERP migrations, automation initiatives, or process overhauls.
    • Familiarity with AI-powered accounting tools or a clear perspective on automating close, reconciliation, and reporting processes.

What Will Make You Successful

  • A self-starter who thrives with autonomy and knows when to seek guidance versus running independently.
  • Strong judgment to distinguish between decisions requiring approval and those you can own, with proactive communication when issues arise.
  • Ability to challenge ideas constructively, raising concerns with evidence and committing fully once decisions are made.
  • Skill in bridging technical accounting with practical business implications, translating complex treatments into clear, actionable insights.
  • Ownership mentality—you don’t just flag problems but come with recommendations for solutions.

First 90 Days

  • Immerse yourself in the business to understand revenue generation, cash flow, key partners, and the operational-financial connection.
  • Build relationships with the accounting team, learning current processes and their history before proposing changes.
  • Conduct a thorough assessment of the books, close process, internal controls, and Workday configuration, producing a prioritized improvement plan.
  • Establish relationships with external audit partners, tax advisors, banking contacts, and internal stakeholders.
  • Lead at least one close cycle, identifying friction points and quick wins.
  • Develop a working rhythm with the CFO, aligning on communication preferences and decision-making cadence.

Work Environment

We are an in-person-first organization, valuing proximity for relationship-building and hands-on process assessment, especially during your first several months. Periodic remote work is supported, but we do not operate on a permanent hybrid or remote schedule. Occasional travel to other company locations may be required.

Pay

Starting base salary: $120,000 annually. Eligible for discretionary bonus opportunities.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and maintain valid work authorization throughout employment. This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored work authorization or visa sponsorship now or in the future. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of Form I-9 employment eligibility verification.
