About the role
We are seeking a financial analyst who will focus on providing professional guidance to management regarding budgeting and accounting policies, methods, and techniques; and independently carry out assignments in budget preparation, cost analysis, and other special assignments in support of the Environmental Sciences Division.
Responsibilities
- Account management, funds control, budget allocations, cost analysis, FWP/SPP budget cycle, cost transfers, special requests, and interaction with project staff to resolve problems.
- Planning, coordination, and final preparation of the sensitive segments of the budget.
- Evaluates changing monetary levels and predicts subsequent impact on UT-Battelle.
- Performs cost analysis on interdivisional projects of major significance.
- Provides professional guidance to management regarding budgeting and accounting policies, methods, and techniques.
- Prepares and ensures compliance with monthly and quarterly reporting requirements and year-end close-out requirements.
- Prepares and delivers financial presentations to Program Management, Division Directors, Lab Management, and DOE Management.
- Identifies and remains compliant with financial laws and regulations.
- Responds to and follows up to ad hoc requests from project staff for financial information.
- Supports in budget preparation and cost analysis as well as other areas of financial responsibility as required.
- Able to become familiar with the ORNL Accounting system and external databases in order to proficiently perform responsible tasks.

Requirements
- A BS/BA degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline.
- Five or more years of broad training and experience in a variety of finance or accounting assignments.
- Demonstrated planning and organizing skills.
- Ability to coordinate many projects simultaneously with changing priorities.
- Excellent problem analysis and resolution skills are required.
- Must possess the ability and willingness to work effectively as a member of a team, as well as independently, as required.
- Excellent attention to detail and well-developed written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to assess priorities, allocate workloads, and meet conflicting deadlines.
- Requires proficiency in applying accounting principles, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to interface with scientific and technical staff utilizing excellent human relations skills.
- Requires proficiency in PC Microsoft Office, word processing, and spreadsheets, such as Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Word.
Qualifications
- A MS/MA degree in finance or accounting, and/or CPA certification.
- Knowledge of UT-Battelle and DOE accounting systems desired.
- Experience with SAP accounting system.
- Experience with power query, MS Power BI.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
