About the Role

The Financial Analyst supports the finance functions for the Divisional Finance Lead (DFL), including the Finance Division’s budget, as well as the Chancellor, Provost, Academic Senate, and VPAP Divisions. This position develops financial analysis that impacts the campus-wide budget and maintains funding records, journals, and related financial analysis. The Financial Analyst implements processes for the DFL, maintains relevant policy and procedures, and supports multi-year planning and financial modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Applies professional concepts to perform moderate to complex financial analysis, supporting position planning and providing analytics around compensation and position data.
  • Provides analytical support for complex budget, financial, or resource analysis projects, including both divisional and campus budget processes.
  • Supports the DFL in implementing department budget allocations and managing UC Berkeley divisional business processes.
  • Gathers, analyzes, and summarizes recommendations for financial and/or resource plans, including allocation approaches, trended future requirements, operating forecasts, and sources and uses.
  • Partners with the DFL to ensure appropriate internal controls are addressed, maintained, and strengthened to protect the University's resources.
  • Performs complex financial or resource research and studies for internal department constituents, including periodic financial reports, staff/faculty salary budgets, contracts, grants, gifts, endowments, or user fees.
  • Prepares, reviews, and/or approves financial transactions relating to divisional billing and procurement, and supports control unit travel and entertainment reviews.
  • Documents procedures for financial activities and may train staff or collaborate with finance team members across the division.
  • Assists in recurring tasks such as monthly, quarterly, and fiscal close processes, revenue forecasting, key controls, and annual UCOP reporting.
  • Responds to emergent campus stakeholder issues related to fee revenue policies and financial planning.

Requirements

  • Ability to independently gather, organize, and analyze complex financial data to draw accurate, actionable conclusions.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate information verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
  • Proven ability using spreadsheets and software for complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Proven interpersonal skills, strong service orientation, critical thinking skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task in a high-volume environment and adapt to changing priorities quickly.
  • Ability to function well as a team member, actively participating in meetings and collaborating with colleagues.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (intermediate or advanced), Microsoft Word, Google Apps (Sheets/Docs), Smartsheet, and DocuSign.

Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of UC Berkeley finance policies, practices, and systems, or the ability to learn.
  • Thorough knowledge of internal control practices and their impact on protecting UC Berkeley resources, or the ability to learn.
  • Working knowledge of campus financial/HR systems (BearBuy, CalPlanning, CalAnswers, UCPath), or the ability to learn.

Education / Training

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Schedule

This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position with eligibility for up to 3 days/week of remote work within the United States. Exact arrangements are determined in partnership with the supervisor.
