Founded in 1968 to meet the post-secondary and continuing education needs of Cecil County residents, Cecil College has been serving the community and shaping its future for more than 50 years. The College is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the governor, with the fifth president, Dr. Mary Way Bolt, reporting directly to the Board. Located in Maryland’s most northeastern county, just half a mile from Interstate 95, Cecil College is easily accessible from Philadelphia, Baltimore, Wilmington, Delaware, and surrounding areas. The College enrolls approximately 2,500 credit students and 3,400 non-credit students, offering associate degrees, certificate programs, and non-credit classes. Employees of Cecil College, including instructors for online and virtual courses, must be residents of Maryland or the contiguous states of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, or the District of Columbia. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the US, as the College does not offer Visa sponsorships.

About the Role

The Financial Aid Office Assistant greets and assists students and their families by answering inquiries related to all facets of the financial aid application process and the status of students’ financial aid records.

Responsibilities

  • Provides related clerical support to assist in daily operations and departmental efficiency, including answering telephones, relaying messages, scheduling appointments, and digital imaging/file creation.
  • Assists office staff with tasks as needed, especially during peak processing times.
  • Responds to inquiries from enrolled, prospective, and former students regarding financial aid programs, including foundation scholarships, MD State and Federal programs, and veterans educational benefits.
  • Manages mail and logs confidential documents to support timely processing of aid applications.
  • Maintains confidentiality, good judgment, and discretion, and follows applicable federal, state, and college regulations and practices.
  • Increases financial aid knowledge through online and on-campus educational opportunities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; associate’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in higher education, preferably in financial aid, is highly preferred.

Skills

  • Demonstrated experience working on a team and relating effectively with students, staff, and the general public in a fast-paced customer service environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and be detail-oriented.
  • Proficiency working with student databases.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional degree of accuracy and possession of analytic skills.

Schedule

  • 25 hours per week: Monday/Wednesday 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM; Tuesday/Thursday/Friday 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
  • Work schedule may vary during critical periods.
  • This position is not eligible for telework.

Physical Demands

This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as sedentary work, involving lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time and occasionally lifting or carrying articles like docket files, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.

Work Environment

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of offices, meeting and training rooms, e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire and building safety regulations, and traffic signals when driving. Periodic travel between college locations and State meetings may be required.

Pay

The hourly rate for the position is $16.00/hr.
