Summary Of Responsibilities

The Financial Aid Counselor fosters a student-centered environment that promotes exceptional customer service and supports students throughout the enrollment process. This position counsels students and their families regarding financial aid programs, application procedures, and financing options, including assistance with enrollment in the Tuition Management System. The Financial Aid Counselor determines financial aid eligibility in accordance with federal regulations and institutional policies, awards aid packages as assigned by the Director of Financial Services, and maintains regular communication with students to ensure timely completion of the financial aid process. Serving as a primary point of contact for student billing and financial aid matters, this position provides ongoing support to students and families while also ensuring the accurate collection, disbursement, and reconciliation of cash and check transactions.

Essential Functions

  • Counsel students and their families regarding financial aid programs, application procedures, eligibility requirements, college financing options, and payment plan resources.
  • Assist students with completing financial aid requirements, including loan entrance counseling, Master Promissory Notes, and exit counseling.
  • Review, verify, and process financial aid applications and supporting documentation in accordance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
  • Determine financial aid eligibility and prepare financial aid award packages based on established policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for students and families throughout the financial aid process, providing timely follow-up and ongoing support.
  • Conduct financial aid presentations, workshops, and outreach programs for prospective and current students, parents, high school counselors, and campus constituents.
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal, state, and institutional financial aid regulations, policies, and best practices to ensure compliance.
  • Aid with the administration of institutional scholarships, donor-funded awards, and other financial assistance programs.
  • Monitor student financial aid files to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timely processing.
  • Collaborate with Admissions, Student Accounts, and other campus offices to support enrollment, retention, and student success initiatives.
  • Aid in the development and distribution of financial aid publications, communications, brochures, presentations, and informational materials.
  • Participate in recruitment events, orientation programs, and other enrollment-related activities as assigned.

Other Functions

  • Serves to facilitate good communication between employees, clients, and management through interpersonal and professional communication techniques.
  • Maintain University safety rules.
  • Maintain knowledge of computer programs as relates to job.
  • Assist with office planning and problem solving.

Education, Experience And Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or three years of progressive customer service and administration experience will be accepted in lieu of the required coursework.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Must have the ability to work both individually and in a team environment.
  • Some evening and weekend work and out of town work may be required.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge and understanding of Schreiner University.
  • Must be able to access the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS).

Additional Qualifications

  • A minimum of two years of experience in financial aid preferred.
  • Ability to perform several tasks concurrently with ease and professionalism.
  • Strong customer service, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity and experience with general office equipment.
