About the Role

The Financial Aid Counselor is the first point of contact for the Office of Financial Aid (OFA) at The Warren Alpert Medical School. This role is responsible for counseling students and parents about all aspects of the financial aid process and directing the activities of the office. The counselor manages aid for all BioMed Master’s programs and reviews aid applications for the MD population to determine federal loan eligibility. Additionally, the counselor meets with students in the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) prior to medical school to determine eligibility for need-based scholarships and loans upon matriculation.

The role involves managing student appointments and all communication the OFA maintains with MD students throughout the year. The counselor also oversees the medical school financial aid application cycle, working with the Banner BDMS system to organize and store documents in a paperless manner. Responsibilities include arranging and scheduling financial aid workshops and events, as well as serving as the communications specialist for medical students seeking financial aid assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel students and parents on all aspects of the financial aid process.
  • Manage financial aid for all BioMed Master’s programs.

  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of Banner and other OFA systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 1-2 years of experience, preferably in an academic environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience utilizing computer systems and skills with applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Federal EDE, and Banner.
  • Effective interpersonal and strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational ability to manage considerable paperwork, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, maintain meticulous records, and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to respond with confidence and good judgment to make independent decisions that provide prompt, high-quality service to students and other constituencies.
