Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as the primary financial aid advisor and point of contact for prospective, current, and former students—both undergraduate and graduate—regarding all financial aid opportunities, including federal grants, loans, work-study, state, institutional, and private scholarships.
- Affirms federal, state, and institutional eligibility for financial aid and scholarship programs, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and university policies and procedures in the review, analysis, and processing of financial aid applications and related documents.
- Provides comprehensive financial aid and scholarship consulting services, exercising professional judgment in complex cases, including Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) issues, mitigating circumstances, and appeals.
- Develops academic plans and recommends solutions for students to maintain or regain eligibility.
- Presents financial aid information to individuals and groups through workshops, orientations, entrance/exit interviews, and campus/community events.
- Led policy research, implementation, documentation, and training of financial aid regulations and procedures across the NMSU system.
- Directs, delegates, and supervises the work of assigned staff, including 4-5 exempt staff members. Provides leadership in staff training, procedural updates, and onboarding for new hires.
- Oversees the coordination and delivery of training on procedural changes and updates.
- Responds to complaints, grievances, and inquiries from students, parents, and other stakeholders by researching and resolving issues related to financial aid and scholarships.
- In the absence of the Associate Director, leads appeal committees and makes recommendations regarding the financial aid eligibility of students with mitigating circumstances.
- Collaborates with other departments to resolve operational issues, providing referrals for crisis intervention as needed.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience: Associate's Degree + 4 years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree + 2 years of relevant experience.
- Preferred Qualifications: Experience with adult and online learners. Experience leading teams in fast-paced financial aid and student service environments.
