Finance Operator, Data
About the role
The Finance Operator, Data builds the financial data infrastructure that all of our companies depend on. This is not a data engineering role, or a dashboard builder who hands outputs to other people. This is not a narrow technical role with a well-defined backlog. You are a finance person first, someone who understands how businesses work, can read a P&L, and knows whether a number is right or wrong. Your differentiator is that you are technically capable in ways most finance people are not.
Responsibilities
- Build the data infrastructure all companies depend on
- Build dashboards, models, automated reports, and data checks that are replicated across every company we launch
- Combine your data expertise with your financial and accounting acumen to automate workflows like revenue recognition, cohort analysis, and reconciliations
- Create automated financial alerts that catch problems early and surface them automatically to minimize manual financial review
- Grow into communicating what you build
- Handle the full financial surface area for any given company, including valuations, tax considerations, SPV distributions, inter-company billing, and funding proposals
- Be a finance person first, able to read a P&L, understand unit economics, and explain what a number means in business terms
- Work in a multi-company environment, holding financial context across multiple businesses simultaneously
- Build systems rather than just doing the work, leaving functions better than when you found them
Qualifications
- 3-6 years of FP&A, financial analysis, or a finance-adjacent analytical role
- Can read a P&L, understand unit economics, and explain what a number means in business terms
- Use SQL to answer financial questions, not just pull data
- Have built something from messy, real-world financial data, not a clean dataset
- Understand revenue recognition across at least one business model well enough to defend it to an auditor
- Know the difference between a technically correct output and a financially correct one
- Have built a cohort model from raw data
- Have worked in a multi-entity environment
- Have experience with Aleph, Looker, Metabase, or a comparable FP&A or BI platform at the build level
- Have automated a reporting process that used to require manual work, and can explain exactly what you built
- Have enough accounting literacy to spot a miscoded transaction and know the correct treatment
What You’ll Bring
- Enough accounting literacy to spot a miscoded transaction and know the correct treatment
- Experience with Aleph, Looker, Metabase, or a comparable FP&A or BI platform at the build level
- Experience with automated reporting processes
- Experience with SQL to answer financial questions
- Experience with revenue recognition across at least one business model
- Experience with multi-entity environments
- Experience with building cohort models from raw data
- Experience with building and explaining financial infrastructure
- Experience with handling the full financial surface area for a growing portfolio
- Experience with building systems rather than just doing the work
What You Won’t Bring
- A finance person who thinks of themselves as a data analyst who happens to work in finance
- A finance person who needs a fully scoped backlog before prioritizing their own work
- A finance person who reaches for percentage-growth assumptions when they need a forecast
- A finance person who wants to stay in the data layer permanently and have no interest in using it to provide insights
- A finance person who is looking for a mature, fully systematized finance function to step into
