Primary Duties
- Examines plans and specifications of commercial and residential buildings to insure compliance with Building Codes and ordinances.
- Initiates review of commercial and residential plans with other City departments and prepares review correspondence with developer and/or architects when necessary.
- Initiates discussions with developers and architects related to required design and development changes when necessary.
- Maintains current knowledge of building construction technology and codes including standards practices and methods of all types of residential construction.
- Maintains computer records and plan checking information utilizing computerized permit tracking system.
- Inputs data into computer databases and special programs requiring repetitive arm/hand movement.
- Prepares written reports and other documents using proper sentence construction, spelling and grammar.
- Affords assistance and advice to the general public, architects, designers and builders on the plan review process and Building and Land Use Codes requirements.
- Performs field inspections as needed.
- Works effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
- Completes work and projects in a thorough and timely manner.
- Understands and follows directions from supervisor, posted work rules and procedures.
- Works courteously and effectively with public officials, citizens, contractors, vendors, developers, supervisor, and other employees, both in person and over the telephone; assisting them with a wide variety of information pertaining to City and department.
Qualifications
- Two years of college level work in building technology, architecture or related field and three years experience in general building construction or administration of nationally recognized building codes; OR five years experience in administration of nationally recognized building codes; OR any combination of experience, certification, training and education that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.
- Possession and retention of a valid state Driver's License without impending loss at time of application is required.
- Certification from the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) or International Code Council (ICC) as a Commercial Plans Examiner is required within 12 months of appointment as a condition of employment.
- Current certification from ICBO as a Building Inspector is preferred.
