About the role

As a Plant Operator at our Fort Wayne, IN retail shop, you will support the team by safely operating equipment for the handling and production of packaged gas cylinders, including both high-pressure and liquefied gases. This role contributes to a diverse and inclusive workplace that values unique perspectives.

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload gas cylinders and other products onto and off route trucks and trailers using proper carts.
  • Sort empty cylinders by type to maintain an organized workflow.
  • Roll cylinders and operate a forklift for moving cylinders on pallets.
  • Develop an understanding of gas hazards, cylinder sizes, and contents by interpreting labels and color-coding.
  • Accurately label cylinders and safely handle high-pressure, medical, and liquid cylinders.
  • Prepare high-pressure cylinders and cryogenic vessels for filling, including attaching to manifolds and evacuating cylinders to eliminate contaminants.
  • Perform basic cylinder maintenance such as painting, labeling, and cleaning the work area.
  • Inspect cylinders prior to filling, adhering to government, Airgas, and distributor standards.
  • Conduct safety checks, including odor tests and checking caps and valves.
  • Fill cylinders by pressure and weight, following regulations and standards.
  • Check cylinder quantities, styles, and product, and assist with inventory.
  • Coordinate documentation to meet DOT, FDA, OSHA, and Airgas standards.
  • Complete quality control sheets as required.
  • Uphold all government and company standards for the safe handling of hazardous materials and cylinder gases.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Experience in a manufacturing operation, particularly filling or loading, is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the gas, welding, safety supply, or chemical industry is valued.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for team alignment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend material safety data sheets to maintain a secure environment.
  • Enjoys collaborating with diverse teams and perspectives.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • High attention to detail and precision.
  • Comfortable with basic calculations (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing) in all units of measure.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages.
  • Ability to safely operate a forklift (training may be provided).

Qualifications

  • Physical dexterity to navigate the plant floor, including walking, sitting, reaching, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Specific vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.
  • Regular physical coordination to stand, bend, stoop, reach, and grasp.
  • Ability to communicate and hear effectively within the facility.
  • Sensory awareness to detect environmental cues, such as smelling or hearing gas leaks.
  • Occasional fine motor tasks or computer entry.
  • Capacity to regularly lift and/or move up to 60 pounds and move up to 800 pounds with material handling equipment.
