About the role

The ideal candidate will bring at least 3 years of SUE utility locating and utility designating experience. This position offers a career development opportunity with potential for business and personal growth, as well as ownership in the firm.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and operate various electromagnetic and GPR designating equipment to locate and mark underground utilities within prescribed accuracy limits.
  • Act as lead on 2-man designating and/or vacuum excavation crew.
  • Read and interpret utility plans/prints to identify the type and size of underground utilities.
  • Provide accurate documentation and/or sketches related to locates completed.
  • Perform manhole entry using assigned equipment and safety devices.
  • Work in all weather conditions, including during normal and after hours.
  • Communicate and coordinate with supervisors, coworkers, and utility representatives.
  • Implement traffic control devices per approved plans and safety protocols.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of SUE experience.
  • Strong knowledge of SUE principles, utility types, and geophysical methods.
  • Proficiency in operating ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic equipment, vacuum excavation trucks, and other relevant subsurface utility detection tools.
  • Familiarity with utility markings, APWA color codes, and industry standards (e.g., ASCE/UESI/CI 38-22).
  • Basic understanding of construction plans, maps, and engineering drawings.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and make accurate judgements in complex field environments.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate and reliable field data and reports.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Overtime, weekend work, and travel may be needed to meet project deadlines.
  • Surveying knowledge is a plus.
  • Familiarity with CAD software and GIS applications is beneficial.
  • Certification in utility locating or SUE methods (e.g., NULCA, UESI) is a plus.
