Field Technician

Stony Brook University’s Center for Clean Water Technology (CCWT) seeks a full-time Research Technician to support field testing of technologies that improve drinking and groundwater quality.

About the role

The successful candidate will work under supervision to monitor and collect data from full- and mesoscale water-treatment installations. The role requires both independent work and collaboration within an interdisciplinary team of scientists and staff. Strong communication skills are essential.

Responsibilities

• Collect water samples from experimental treatment systems at residential and commercial sites across Long Island.
• Record onsite observations and water-quality measurements (dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity).
• Coordinate scheduling of sample collection and laboratory tasks.
• Supervise and train graduate-student sampling teams, ensuring compliance with NYS Department of Health and university protocols.
• Perform routine wastewater laboratory analyses: five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD₅), total suspended solids, alkalinity.
• Assist with office duties, site-condition reports, and field/laboratory data entry and analysis.
• Maintain laboratory cleanliness and supplies according to SBU Laboratory Safety guidelines.
• Participate in lab meetings.
• Perform other duties or projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree (or foreign equivalent).
• Two years of full-time field-sampling experience.
• Valid NYS driver’s license (or out-of-state license with ability to obtain NYS license within 30 days of hire); driving record free of major violations or repeat offenses.

Qualifications (preferred)

• Bachelor of Science (or foreign equivalent) in Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, or related field.
• Experience with onsite septic systems or sewage-treatment plants.
• Experience performing water-quality analyses (dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, total suspended solids, or other wastewater parameters).

Pay

$47,000 – $50,000 per year.

Schedule

Full-time, FLSA non-exempt (eligible for overtime).
