Field Supervisor (Switchgear)

About the role
A Field Supervisor leads a regional team responsible for start-up commissioning, integration, emergency service, and troubleshooting of Vertiv electrical switchgear (480VAC/15KVAC), including PDU, ATS, PDC, circuit breakers, protective relays, PLCs, meters, and other automated devices, as well as mechanical repairs and modifications. The role establishes and maintains excellent customer rapport while providing technical expertise, safety leadership, and accountability for installed projects, technical support, and time-and-material work.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, train, and assist field service technicians, overseeing all aspects of field service work in the region.
- Perform complex troubleshooting, specialized tests, inspections, and appraisals on electrical apparatus and systems.
- Supervise large projects requiring specialized skills, such as acceptance tests, commissioning of substations, turnkey projects, power surveys, and electrical consultations.
- Develop tests and inspections for new areas of field services.
- Handle job estimating, proposal preparation, fieldwork, scheduling, reporting, and billing.
- Write detailed reports promptly at project completion, process job billing accurately, and maintain timely reporting per company guidelines (timecards, expense reports, mileage, ticket closure, forms).
- Engage in client interface and business development activities.
- Register area associates for required training and oversee on-the-job training (OJT) completion.
- Provide guidance on complicated situations and maintain certifications per the job progression table.
- Assist in developing safety and quality procedures/guidelines.
- Maintain individual inventory and company property (vehicle, credit cards, PPE, test equipment, laptop) according to company policies.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external customers, including providing estimated time of arrival and completing scheduled maintenance documentation.
- Maintain customer satisfaction rates per company guidelines and attend customer meetings as required.
- Lead by example, demonstrating high professionalism, service delivery, diplomacy, and productivity under pressure.
- Enforce company dress code and safety regulations, meet on-site response time requirements, and comply with startup/escalation processes.
- Supervise 8–10 Service Center Field Technicians.
Requirements
- Graduate of an applicable electrical technical school or military equivalent with nine years of relevant experience, or a high school education or equivalent with ten years of relevant experience.
- Working knowledge of electrical power distribution, generators, switchgear, automatic transfer switches, and related equipment.
- Strong foundation in electrical power theory, application, and safety procedures.
- Expertise in the National Electrical Code (NEC) and industry standards such as OSHA and NFPA.
- Ability to provide on-site customer consultation and present as an expert in the field.
- Expert analytical, problem-solving, and communication (verbal and written) skills.
- Ability to manage customer expectations during stressful situations.
- Strong supervisory, organizational, and management skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical line diagrams and blueprints.
- Capability to summarize and report work-related tasks and provide technical assistance via telephone.
- Independently evaluate, recognize, and recommend customer solutions based on site evaluations.
- Direct technical activities at customer sites and lead other technicians.
- Ability to regularly lift at least 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities: close, distant, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, internet research, and operation of computer-controlled test equipment.
Physical & Environmental Demands
- Medium lifting (30–45 lbs) and heavy lifting (over 50 lbs).
- Frequent standing, kneeling, crawling, stooping, bending, twisting, and climbing (stairs, ladders).
- Frequent driving (car, van, truck).
- Exposure to medium/high noise levels (need to shout to be heard).
- Working around moving machinery (forklifts, tractors).
- Use of protective equipment (earplugs, gloves, eyewear, respirator, mask, etc.).
- 80% travel required.
