Duties

  • Develop and maintain liaison with other Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies; coordinates law enforcement efforts having impact with other agencies

Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Requirements

  • Primary law enforcement position under special retirement provisions (5 U.S.C. 8336(c) CSRS and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) FERS)
  • Subject to maximum entry age requirements; must not exceed age 37 unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian service in a 6(c) covered position OR you are a preference eligible veteran
  • New Law Enforcement Rangers must complete Introduction to Resource Protection Training within first two years
  • Must complete Natural Resource Police Training (NRPT) at FLETC or approved equivalent before delegation of law enforcement authority
  • Successful completion of Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) must occur within one year of receiving delegation; failure results in loss of delegation and/or termination

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and must not have reached 37th birthday upon appointment (exceptions: prior Federal service in primary covered position sufficient to complete 20 years by mandatory retirement age 57, or qualified veterans' preference eligible)
  • Must have a current, valid State Driver's License by 09/08/2026

For GL-9 grade level:

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7 level performing at least four of: investigating criminal activity involving violence, theft, destruction of property, or trespassing; issuing citations and assisting in filing criminal complaints; preparing documentation for court proceedings and/or providing testimony; conducting investigations involving locating, securing, and protecting crime scenes; gathering and/or seizing evidence
  • OR master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related
  • OR combination of education and experience

For GS-11 grade level:

  • One full year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS-9 level including: performing criminal investigations and applying laws of evidence; testifying in court; preparing investigative reports; applying Federal and state laws; understanding administrative, civil, and criminal procedures; coordinating criminal investigations; experience related to law enforcement activities involving public lands and natural resources
  • OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related
  • OR combination of education and experience

  • Promotion to full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied
  • Veterans' preference: must supply DD-214 and SF-15 if applicable for MEA waiver eligibility
  • Proof of prior 6(c) covered service must be submitted prior to employment (SF-50s showing beginning and ending dates)
  • Volunteer experience (Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, etc.) is creditable
  • To substitute education for experience, transcripts must include name, school name, grades, credit hours, major(s), GPA or class ranking, and date degree conferred
  • Foreign education requires proof that the education is equivalent to accredited U.S. education
