Field Services Maintenance Apprentice - Street, Water Line, and Wastewater

Definition

Under direction performs work of considerable difficulty in the supervision of a fire company and its equipment; and performs related duties as assigned.

Examples Of Duties

• Directs and participates in fire suppression activities: takes command at fire or other emergency scenes in the absence of any superior officer; designates plan of attack upon analysis of the scene; directs and assists in positioning of apparatus, evolution of equipment, rescue, and access and firefighting efforts; learns and practices first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic life support techniques at the scene of fires and other emergencies.
• Supervises a firefighting company on assigned shift: directs daily activities and monitors work performance; motivates subordinates and maintains company morale; plans, schedules and assigns station duties; provides technical training in fire prevention and suppression, cites personnel problems, and issues corrective advice.
• Insures proper condition of facilities and equipment to meet department standards: prescribes housecleaning and maintenance standards and requirements.
• Schedules and supervises daily inspection duties: accompanies inspection personnel; advises in non-routine inspection instances; inspects large or complex structures and facilities for proper code compliance; insures accuracy and completeness of inspection reports.
• Maintains all company and station logs: posts daily activities and completes reports on all incidents in which company participates; cites personnel and equipment problems; compiles monthly, quarterly and annual summary reports.
• Maintains all company equipment and of station facilities: insures readiness and functionability of all fire suppression and rescue apparatus and equipment; reports maintenance and replacement needs; ensures proper inventory and security of all city equipment, apparatus and stations under assigned command.
• May be designated responsibility for special department programs and may be assigned to related Fire Department duties and activities as necessary.

Qualifications

• Requires one completed year of service as a Fire Lieutenant with the Davenport Fire Department
• Requires a valid Iowa Driver's License and must maintain throughout duration of employment

Knowledge and Skills

• Comprehensive Knowledge of:
• Departmental orders and operational procedures.
• Geographic locations of streets, landmarks, fire hazards, water supply, and other important locations.
• Fire suppression apparatus, equipment, and materials.
• Considerable Knowledge of:
• Established methods and standards for fire suppression and prevention.
• First aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and basic life support methods.
• Considerable Skill in:
• Applying fire safety standards and regulations in inspection situations.
• Leading, training, scheduling, and directing the work of firefighting personnel.
• Monitoring discipline and morale.
• Operating a variety of fire apparatus, tools, and equipment.
• Maintaining accurate activity logs and compiling reports.
• Making quick, sound decisions in exercising good judgment in the handling of emergency situations.
• Structuring, monitoring, and coordinating a variety of station activities, projects, assignments, and responsibilities.
• Understanding interpersonal dynamics and exerting a stabilizing influence.
• Performing heavy physical labor under arduous conditions.
