Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive, corrective, and major maintenance on natural gas compression equipment (engines, compressors, coolers, and related systems).
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation issues to restore equipment performance.
- Conduct engine overhauls, compressor rebuilds, and component replacements.
- Support start-ups, shutdowns, commissioning, and optimization activities.
- Travel to assigned districts to provide temporary coverage, assist with backlogs, or support new equipment deployments.
- Respond to call-outs and emergency situations during rotation.
- Adapt to varying equipment packages, customer sites, and operating conditions.
- Submit accurate maintenance reports, expense reports, timesheets and other necessary paperwork daily.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all USA Compression safety policies, procedures, and environmental standards.
- Participate in safety meetings, audits, and required training.
- Maintain accurate documentation including work orders, service reports, and parts usage.
Customer & Team Collaboration
- Serve as a professional representative of USA Compression at customer locations.
- Communicate effectively with district leadership, dispatch, and fellow technicians.
- Provide feedback on equipment performance, recurring issues, and improvement opportunities.
Qualifications
- Required:
- Solid professional communication/interface skills with customer field personnel, onsite vendors, and other employees.
- This role is often the USAC position with the most customer interaction. Excellent customer service and positive communication skills are critical to the success in the FST role.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with experience in engines, rotating equipment, or heavy machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Able to safely operate a water vessel (boat).
- Able to travel extensively and work a rotational schedule.
- Able to work independently in outdoor, remote, and sometimes harsh environments.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Preferred:
- Prior experience in gas compression with preference to CAT, Ariel and/or Cummins certifications and experience.
- Technical certification or vocational training in diesel, natural gas engines, or industrial maintenance.
- Prior experience in oil & gas field operations or compression services.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems.
Work Environment
- Typically, an FST’s work day consists of driving a USA Compression Water Vessel (Motor Boat) and/or riding customer owned Water Vessel (Motorboat) to customer locations to perform repair and maintenance activities.
- The role rotates 7 days on/off away from home to our workplace.
- This position is 100% on-site and field-based; no remote or hybrid options.
- Some exposure to high noise levels in excess of 85dBA that require ear protection, as well as exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and materials.
- Extensive travel required during rotation; lodging and Meals provided on platforms, Either inland or offshore, depending on assigned location.
- Exposure to outdoor weather, rotating equipment, and industrial environments.
