About the role
Stephenson Equipment, Inc (SEI) is seeking a Field Service Technician for our Baltimore, MD location. In this role, you will diagnose, repair, and overhaul mechanical and pneumatic equipment—such as bulldozers, graders, cranes, and conveyors—used in the construction industry at customer sites. You will operate out of a company-provided truck and are expected to supply your own basic tools.
Responsibilities
- Repair and replace damaged or worn parts.
- Operate and inspect machines or heavy equipment to diagnose defects.
- Test mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers' specifications.
- Diagnose faults or malfunctions using engine diagnostic equipment, such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
- Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools.
- Clean, lubricate, and perform routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
- Comply with all safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE.
- Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges.
- Schedule maintenance for industrial machines and equipment, and keep service records.
- Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
- Overhaul and test machines or equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
- Assemble gear systems and align frames and gears.
- Fit bearings to adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.
- Weld or solder broken parts and structural members using electric or gas welders and soldering tools.
- Clean parts by spraying them with grease solvent or immersing them in tanks of solvent.
- Adjust, maintain, and repair or replace subassemblies, such as transmissions and crawler heads, using hand tools, jacks, and cranes.
- Adjust and maintain industrial machinery using controls and regulating devices.
- Communicate effectively and actively participate in a goal-oriented team environment.
- Engage in problem-solving and continuous improvement activities.
- Maintain a clean and organized service truck.
- Check in and out with on-site customer contact when reporting to or leaving a job.
- Maintain a clean driving record.
Requirements
- One-year certificate from a college or technical school; or three to six months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations with limited standardization.
- Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Working Conditions
- Work environments vary by customer site, with moderate to loud noise levels.
- Temperatures vary seasonally.
- Extended periods of standing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, depending on the machine being serviced, within an 8–10 hour workday.
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs, with occasional lifts up to 100 lbs assisted by a crane.
Pay
$28 to $36 per hour.
