Field Service Technician

About the role

As a Field Service Technician at Smith & Loveless, you will operate autonomously to troubleshoot and resolve client needs related to wastewater and pumping systems at client locations. You will utilize mechanical and electrical resources provided by the company, along with your technical knowledge and experience, to support our field services team in an environmentally focused industry.

Responsibilities

• Start up and troubleshoot Smith & Loveless equipment in the field.
• Communicate with customer/site personnel and S&L Engineering, Field Service, Warranty, and Sales teams during start-up and troubleshooting.
• Train customer personnel in the operation and maintenance of S&L equipment.
• Prepare detailed field reports describing equipment problems or issues relevant to S&L equipment operation and design.
• Complete expense reports and start-up reports in a timely fashion.
• Act as a general technical resource on S&L equipment for internal departments and outside customers.
• Answer customer correspondence regarding equipment issues.
• Assist other Field Service Engineers with start-up and troubleshooting as needed.
• Assist with training new field service engineers in the field.
• Ensure start-ups are completed within allowed costs and minimize warranty and back charges.
• Maintain neat and clean office areas, storage areas, and vehicles.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Customer Service Manager.

Requirements

• High school graduate or GED; some college or technical school preferred.
• 2–4 years’ experience in equipment servicing and troubleshooting.
• Working knowledge of pumping equipment, water treatment equipment, and controls preferred.
• Mechanical experience with tools, assembly piping, gaskets, and gears preferred.
• Electrical experience in relay logic, PLCs, high voltage, and schematics preferred.
• Coding skills for PLCs and control panels a plus.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
• Good customer service skills with accuracy and follow-through.
• Able to read and understand blueprints and wiring diagrams.
• Excellent troubleshooting skills (electrical & mechanical) with the ability to work independently.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and U.S. passport (or ability to possess one).

• Required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
• Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
• Frequent stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing.
• Reach with hands and arms.
• Required to talk and hear consistently.
• Ability to occasionally lift, carry, and/or drag up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required to distinguish the nature of objects.
• Ability to ascend and descend two flights of stairs.
• Ability to work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends as necessary.
• Requires extensive travel (70% annually) and ability to work in a wastewater treatment environment.
