Field Service Mechanic / Technician (Utility Trucks & Equipment)

Field Tech position based in Grass Lake, MI 49240; can be located in Ann Arbor, Monroe, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and surrounding areas. You provide your own mechanics tools and a valid driver’s license; CTOS provides a utility truck equipped with a welder, 4-ton crane, company computer, and phone.

About the role

Primary responsibility is to perform vehicle troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance work on chassis and track-mounted aerials, digger derricks, cranes, high-rail, and other equipment in the field, in accordance with dealer and factory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Report to Service Manager, who provides a brief description of issues and supporting information related to the vehicle.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals and repair orders/instructions to perform required maintenance and service. Use a laptop to access needed information and perform diagnostic tests.
  • Perform work as outlined in work instructions set forth by Service Manager; efficiently, accurately, and in accordance with Custom Truck One Source standards.
  • Diagnose and repair LMI (Load Moment Indicator) and CAN bus (Controller Area Network).
  • Troubleshoot and repair utility trucks and equipment, including electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Inspect and service vehicles, making repairs and adjustments both at the service center and in the field.
  • Verify work performed and road test vehicles as necessary.
  • Prepare inspection reports, repair orders (recording service time and parts costs), and timecards completely and accurately.
  • Tag all warranty and core parts for return.
  • Advise management immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time.
  • Attend CTOS safety training and follow all safety requirements.
  • Attend CTOS and factory-sponsored training classes.
  • Understand and follow federal, state, and local regulations such as those governing the disposal of hazardous wastes.
  • Communicate easily with customers and internal departments to ensure minimal equipment downtime.
  • Flexibility to travel beyond the area of coverage (10-20%) based on business need.
  • Work closely with Service Manager to grow and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Perform additional duties or responsibilities as designated by the Service Manager.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Five years of related experience (shop tech and field tech).
  • Valid driver’s license (CDL Class B preferred).
  • Must have your own tools.
  • Proficient in documentation using software, meeting deadlines and schedules.

Preferred Skills

  • Electrical, schematic/blueprints, hydraulic, welding, and related experience.
  • Experience with Quick Serve, DTNA, or related diagnostic software.
  • DOT, ANSI, and Dielectric testing experience.

Mental/Physical Requirements

  • Ability to regularly work in outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions; occasional exposure to extreme cold and extreme heat.
  • Moderate to loud noise levels in the work environment.
  • Positive attitude, professionalism, and punctual attendance.
  • Physical capability for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and lift.
  • Comfort with heights and manual labor.
  • Manual dexterity for operating tools and equipment.
