Job Purpose

The Field Mechanic, Pump is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of pump equipment at customer job sites and Herc Rentals branches. This role ensures equipment operates efficiently and safely, providing technical support directly in the field and minimizing downtime for clients. The position focuses on both mechanical and minor electrical work across a wide range of specialized pumping equipment and related systems.

What you will do

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain a variety of industrial pump systems, including diesel, electric, submersible, and centrifugal pumps, at customer sites and company branches
  • Travel to job locations for emergency repairs, scheduled maintenance, and equipment installation
  • Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on all assigned equipment
  • Use diagnostic tools and technical manuals to determine equipment malfunctions
  • Document work completed and parts used, and report any further service requirements
  • Communicate effectively with customers and branch personnel regarding repair status and timelines
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in safe working order
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and Herc Rentals procedures
  • Train end users or customers on the proper use and daily maintenance of pump equipment as required
  • Participate in on-call rotations or emergency response schedules as assigned

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical school or trade certification preferred
  • 2+ years of experience as a mechanic, preferably in pump systems, heavy equipment, or diesel engines
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; ability to obtain CDL if required
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and minor electrical issues
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, electrical schematics, and technical bulletins
  • Ability to travel within the assigned region
  • Availability for occasional overtime, on-call, and weekend work as business needs dictate

Skills

  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities for pumps and related equipment
  • Proficient with hand and power tools, as well as specialized diagnostic equipment
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and OSHA standards
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in challenging environments
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new technologies
  • Basic proficiency with computers and mobile devices for service documentation
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds frequently
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors as required
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks, including stretching, turning, twisting, and reaching overhead
  • Ability to bend, crouch, squat, kneel, and stoop for extended periods

Pay

$31 - $35 per hour
