Field Service Engineer 1

About the role

This position provides highly visible customer support through on‑site installation, diagnosis, troubleshooting, service, and repair of complex equipment and systems. The role also involves ensuring operational quality, instructing customers, and acting as a liaison between Onto Innovation and its customers.

Responsibilities

• Perform on‑site installation, diagnosis, troubleshooting, service, and repair of complex equipment and systems.
• Check out and approve operational quality of system equipment versus Onto specifications.
• Instruct customers in the operation of the system.
• Serve as company liaison with customers on administrative and technical matters for assigned projects.
• Interpret customers’ needs and clarify responsibility for problem resolution (sales personnel, customer support reps, or engineers).
• Handle any aspect of field support, not limited to system hardware and software, PCs, IP telephony, networking, or wireless networking.
• Apply professional concepts, company policies, and procedures to resolve a variety of issues.
• Act in an advisory capacity, making recommendations for continuous improvement of the organization’s business.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Electronics, Systems Engineering, Materials Science, or Analytical Chemistry; or an undergraduate degree/vocational certificate in any of the above fields with 3 years of experience.
• Requires 50 % to 75 % travel.
• Metrology tool experience, operation, or technical/field service support at any tool vendor or customer is a plus.
• Preferred related experience in the semiconductor field.

Preferred Skills

• Proficient English communication.
• Familiarity with Windows, Microsoft Office, and/or Linux.
• Proficiency with handy tooling, digital multimeters, and other troubleshooting equipment.
• Self‑motivated and forward‑thinking, consistently seeking continuous improvement.
• Proactive and process‑oriented.

Compensation

Base Salary Range: $51,120 – $76,680, offered in good faith and based on experience, location, and qualifications. Additional rewards include annual bonus opportunities and potential long‑term incentives tied to both company and individual success.
