Field Safety Specialist

About the role

As the Field Safety Specialist, you will provide support to MGE Underground’s Civil Construction, Supervisors, Foremen, and Crew Members. The Field Safety Specialist works to detect, prevent, and mitigate safety risks, offering subject matter expertise on field observations and guidance on corrective actions. This position communicates safety trends, recommends corrective actions, and serves as a resource for developing, implementing, and sustaining company safety initiatives. Travel up to 75% between central and valley regions may be required.

Responsibilities

• Conduct incident investigations and Loss Prevention Observations (LPOs).
• Investigate safety incidents resulting in employee injury, work procedure errors, or damage to company and third-party property.
• Assist in coaching, mentoring, and implementing HS&E programs in the field.
• Review and stay familiar with applicable legislation, standards, and company policies to ensure compliance.
• Inform the Safety Manager of new or conflicting legislative matters that could impact the company.
• Assist in developing a Safety Management Plan (SMP) to ensure a safe work environment for employees, contractors, visitors, and the community.
• Regularly audit the SMP for compliance and update it to align with company goals and safety standards.
• Provide direction, support, and resources to Civil Construction Managers, Supervisors, and Foremen.
• Ensure all incidents are reported immediately to the Safety Manager and/or Safety Director.
• Participate in incident investigations to determine root causes and corrective actions.
• Ensure incident corrective actions are followed up on and completed.
• Ensure injured workers are offered modified duties and formal documentation is completed; monitor and follow up on modified workers in the field.
• Review client safety obligations and ensure they are carried out as per agreement terms, communicating them to Project Managers, Supervisors, Foremen, and Crew Members.
• Prepare for and participate in safety audits.
• Communicate, coach, and assist civil construction staff to ensure safety expectations are understood and met.
• Communicate safety trends and recommend corrective actions.
• Perform other job-related duties as required.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• 5 years of experience in civil construction.
• 4-7 years of experience in the safety and construction industry.
• Valid Class C Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
• Ability to travel and stay overnight as required (average of 2 nights may be expected).

• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Desired Qualifications

• Occupational Health and Safety Degree, Diploma, or Certificate, or CRSP designation.
• National Construction Safety Officer Certificate.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently required to walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear.
• Often required to stand and walk for prolonged periods; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds individually, push, pull, or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue, and effectively jump, sprint, or throw an object.
• Must be able to bend, stretch, push, pull, and move as needed to reach, clean, and service machinery.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus; must be able to visually inspect machines.
• May be required to drive a motor vehicle and travel to various locations.

Pay

$49.00 - $52.00 per hour. This pay range reflects competitive compensation at the time of this job posting. Your pay will be determined based on experience, education, skills, and applicable knowledge.
