About the Role
This is a full-time position responsible for enforcing the animal control ordinance, ensuring the humane treatment of animals in the county’s protective custody, and acting as a first-line supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service while in shelter and in the field.
- Manage Animal Control Officers, assigning work schedules, daily assignments, and on-call schedules, including offsite events as needed.
- Oversee intake procedures, ensuring all animals receive proper vaccinations and exams upon arrival at the shelter.
- Ensure officers respond to citizen calls, investigate reports of animal cruelty, prepare and file incident reports, interpret laws and ordinances, and serve citations and subpoenas.
- Impound stray animals, provide aid to sick or injured animals, respond to animal bite reports, secure aggressive animals, and arrange quarantine for animals.
- Oversee the safe housing and disposition of animals in bite quarantine.
- Assist the Veterinarian with the euthanasia process as needed.
- Assess animals alongside the Kennel Supervisor for participation in programs.
- Work with the Kennel Supervisor to assign staff for cleaning and disinfecting dog kennels and cat cages; sweep, mop, and disinfect floors; provide medical treatment to animals; feed animals; and monitor animals for signs of injury or illness.
- Answer multiple phone lines, process complaints, dispatch field officers, record animal intakes, provide adoption education and counseling, prepare rabies specimens, and prepare court cases.
- Attend and testify in court.
- Train new Animal Control Officers.
- Transport deceased animals for disposal.
- Assist with daily cleaning and care of the shelter and animals housed within.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level associated with high school completion or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, typically gained through an apprenticeship, internship, or 1-2 years in a similar role.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Georgia driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Pay
Starting salary: $47,974.04
