Field Mechanic

This position performs maintenance and repairs at various job sites and remote locations in the Central MN area, including Duluth, Mora, and Virginia. Responsible for the full range of maintenance and repair for heavy-duty trucks, large construction equipment, and tractor trailers, ensuring all vehicles and equipment remain in good running condition.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-plan and identify methods to eliminate hazards daily by work task.
  • Uphold safety as the most important goal; support the goal of achieving zero injuries.
  • Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, PTOs, brake systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, cranes, digger derricks, aerial devices, and other fleet components.
  • Perform DOT inspections, monthly and annual inspections, and dielectric testing on equipment.
  • Complete repairs noted on inspections and facilitate all necessary documentation and paperwork.
  • Install and troubleshoot telematics in fleet equipment.
  • Perform tune-ups, brake jobs, functional adjustments, preventative maintenance, metal fabrication, and welding.
  • Respond to road service calls and perform repairs, preventative maintenance, and inspections at job sites.
  • Assist Fleet Manager with maintaining service and repair records, researching, and purchasing equipment parts and supplies.

Requirements

  • Valid CDL driver’s license and medical card.
  • High school education or GED.
  • Associate’s degree in Heavy Duty Truck/Heavy Equipment repair or five years of experience performing repairs and maintenance of heavy equipment.
  • Minnesota DOT inspector certification or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Must supply a basic set of tools for work in the shop.
  • Qualified to perform annual inspections.

Skills

  • Positive safety attitude and personal integrity (non-negotiable).
  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and engines.
  • Knowledge of safety issues related to tools, equipment, and supplies used in repair.
  • Ability to complete service and repair tasks from basic to complex with minimal supervision.
  • Skill in using hand tools, gas and electric welding equipment, mechanized tools, jacks, and hoists.
  • Skill in using diagnostic testing and tuning equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions.
  • Ability to read manuals and schematics.
  • Ability to rebuild engines and major driveline components.
  • Strong communication skills for discussing repair work needed.
  • Ability to determine work priorities and order parts and supplies.
  • Ability to acquire effective knowledge of service procedures for all fleet equipment.

Pay

$33.00/hr - $40.00/hr
