Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Properly inspect and maintain equipment, vehicles, tools, and supplies.
- Select, plant, care for, and remove plants and landscaping within the right-of-way on major roads within the City of Saint Charles.
- Select, inventory, and apply chemical herbicides and insecticides.
- Repair and construct hardscape improvements such as pavers, benches, retaining walls, etc.
- Mow, trim, and remove debris within the right-of-way.
- Operate in a safe and efficient manner equipment and vehicles, hand and power tools.
- Excavate, expose and repair sewers and irrigation component via manual or mechanical methods.
Knowledge Required
- Knowledge of appropriate safety standards and procedures, including work zone traffic control.
Physical and Mental Abilities Required
- Lift and carry heavy tools, equipment, and materials (typically 50–100 lbs).
- Operate heavy machinery and tools like jackhammers, backhoe, and vacuum trucks.
- Perform physically demanding tasks (e.g., digging, raking, shoveling) for extended periods.
- Sustain continuous manual labor for durations of 2 to 4 hours between break(s).
- Work is performed in varying field conditions and may require repetitive motion, exertion, and Mobility & Flexibility.
- Bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, and crawling in confined or uneven spaces.
- Overhead work with extended arms.
- Ladder / Step climbing.
- Maintain balance on uneven, wet, or sloped surface.
- Confined space entry (e.g., manholes, trenches).
- Use visual acuity to read plans, work orders, safety labels, etc.
- Exercises sound judgement, practical reasoning, and situational awareness to safely and efficiently address field challenges.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings using distance and peripheral vision.
- Distinguish between color-coded signs, labels, etc.
- Hear and interpret instruction and warning in noisy environments.
- Use fine and gross motor skills for equipment operation and tool usage.
Environmental Conditions
- Work outdoors in extreme heat (>90°F) and cold.
- Perform duties in inclement weather such as rain, snow, and high winds.
- Exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, and other airborne irritants.
- Exposure to high noise levels; use of hearing protection is required.
- Standing and walking often on rough or uneven terrain.
Minimum Training and Experience Required
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- A working knowledge of drainage and irrigation systems, and associated methods, procedures and materials used in maintenance, construction and repair of those systems.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of a Missouri Department of Agriculture Pesticide Certified Applicator License for Categories 3 and 6 preferred or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Missouri Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker endorsements or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
