Field Laborer position maintaining cemetery grounds, including mowing, trimming, landscaping, and snow removal. Reports to the Foreman under the direction of the Field Manager.
Responsibilities
- Prepares graves and maintains cemetery grounds.
- Performs snow removal.
- Performs landscaping duties, including trimming grass and weeds, pruning trees and shrubbery, and mowing grass.
- Operates a variety of equipment, including mowers, string trimmers, Cushman utility vehicles, backhoe, dump truck, tractor, bed edger, hedge trimmer, and chain saw.
- Positions casket-lowering device on the grave and covers the dirt pile and sod with artificial grass carpet.
- Erects tent/canopy and arranges folding chairs to prepare the site for burial service; removes sod from the gravesite.
- Prepares the ground for burial, including locating the gravesite by section, lot, and plot number, and marking the area to be excavated.
- Digs the grave to a specified depth, places the vault and foundation grave marker, and sets the grave marker in concrete.
- Opens and closes mausoleum vaults.
- Ensures all work is completed in adherence to safety policies and guidelines.
- Maintains a high level of housekeeping and care of company assets, including vehicles, shop, and worksites.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Current and valid driver’s license with clean driving history.
- 6 months or more related experience, training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in landscaping, grounds keeping, or lawn care (commercial or residential).
- Hands-on experience operating heavy equipment such as backhoe, dump truck, or tractor.
- Experience in cemetery, funeral services, or grave preparation work.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), depending on vehicle requirements.
- OSHA 10 certification or equivalent general safety training.
- Experience in a customer-facing role requiring composure and discretion, particularly around grieving families.
Skills
- Ability to kneel, bend, and pull weeds by hand around bushes, trees, and flower beds.
- Ability to operate heavy machinery such as a dump truck and backhoe.
- High level of customer service.
- Excellent oral communication.
- Ability to read and interpret written information.
- Ability to observe safety and security procedures.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift or move up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, balance, stoop, kneel, and use hands and arms.
Work Environment
- Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
- Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts.
- Exposed to high, precarious places and vibration.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Pay
$17.00 - $22.00/hour (non-exempt, hourly).
Schedule
- Monday – Saturday, 7:15 A.M. – 4:30 P.M.
- Saturday work not guaranteed each week, but availability to work Saturdays when scheduled is required.
- Standard field schedule; may include occasional weekend or on-call hours to support burial services.
- Ability to travel to different CCA cemeteries throughout Northeast Ohio as needed.
