Responsibilities
- Act as the Head Coach if the head coach is unavailable for practice and/or games.
- Develop a recruiting plan for the program, including travel to off-campus tournaments during the summer months to evaluate student athletes and create itineraries for on-campus visits for prospective student athletes and their family members.
- Assist the head coach with instructing players in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
- Assess players’ skills, monitor players during competition and practice, and keep the head coach informed of the athletic performance of students.
- Maintain a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering (for both the head coach and athletic director).
- Work within the basic framework and philosophy of the head coach and assist with determining game strategy.
- Supervise athletes during practices and competition.
- Attend all staff meetings and carry out scouting assignments as outlined by the head coach.
- Model sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct toward players, officials, and spectators.
- Arrive 15 minutes before practice and 60 minutes before contests and meetings to adequately prepare, and remain afterward to assist players or participate in staff discussions.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs, with consistent attendance.
- Avoid criticizing, admonishing, or arguing with the head coach or any staff member within earshot or view of players or parents.
- Remain at practices, games, or other contests until the last student has left.
- Perform other duties consistent with the nature of the position as requested by the head coach.
Requirements
- Successful completion of the NCAA certification exam.
- Commitment to compliance with NCAA, East Coast Conference, and Mercy College policies and regulations.
- Submission of all required requests/paperwork.
- Ability to effectively work with a diverse population of student athletes and coaches in a cultural climate that celebrates diversity.
