Field Engineer, Construction

Oversee and execute the project controls and management of the Piping discipline. Responsibilities include direct support to a Craft Superintendent, quantity collection, scheduling, contract administration, project planning, procurement, and project reporting. This role requires interfacing with clients, engineering/design teams, subcontractors, vendors, and project management to ensure project status communication.

This is a traveling, project-based position with up to 90% travel time. Projects typically last 8-18 months and may be located in any U.S. state. We offer designated per diem, mobilization support (including mileage reimbursement), and one longer weekend every four weeks for additional time at home.

Responsibilities

• Represent the company professionally in all client interactions.
• Provide contract-required reports (weekly, monthly, schedule).
• Understand and follow the Corporate Safety Plan and site-specific safety plans.
• Perform quantity calculations by measuring and determining the percentage of completed/installed materials and work.
• Develop processes for creating and reviewing work plans and work packages.
• Ensure the site quality plan is communicated, and all inspections and quality documentation are completed on time.
• Manage the compilation, processing, and customer approval of daily labor timesheets.
• Compile and distribute the Average Labor Rate to front-line supervision weekly.
• Train craft and staff employees on completing Job Safety Analysis (JSAs).
• Participate in or lead jobsite safety reviews, toolbox meetings, mass safety meetings, and safety training.
• Order, schedule material deliveries, and develop procurement status reports.
• Plan, schedule, and coordinate work groups on the jobsite.
• Perform material takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and other contract documents.
• Perform basic engineering calculations and technical drafting to support field operations.
• Assist engineers in gathering and preparing data for submittal or transmittal to customers, vendors, subcontractors, and governmental agencies.
• Prepare field-issued purchase orders and subcontracts, and perform material buyout takeoffs from issued-for-construction drawings.
• Direct home office procurement and subcontract administration functions.
• Provide field support and supervise subcontractor operations.
• Manage all project recordkeeping and correspondence, including daily reports, photographs, RFIs, submittals, transmittals, and memorandums.
• Create and monitor project controls such as productivity tracking, indirect scheduling, equipment schedules, risk and opportunity logs.
• Create and maintain the master project schedule.
• Generate change orders and as-built data for review by the Project Manager.
• Drive the planning process through the master schedule, 6-week, 3-week, 1-week, and manpower curves.
• Administer accounting/job costs/work in progress (WIP) updates and assist the Project Manager with these activities.
• Lead the budgeting process by converting the estimate to Standard Phase codes.
• Alert the Project Manager and Home Office of trends regarding labor, material, subcontractor, and equipment costs.
• Accurately manage the cost forecasting process for the entire project (labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment).
• Establish the cash flow forecast and curve to ensure positive cash flow for the project.
• Act as the primary company representative in the absence of or as directed by the Project Manager or Project Engineer.
• Know the provisions, terms, and scope of the Prime contract.
• Develop and prepare the Schedule of Values and all invoices to the customer.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Support a crew of up to 50 people for short periods if needed.
• Lead 1-2 Field Engineers.
• Oversee and manage a portion of the field office staff, including engineers, office managers, document control, schedulers, procurement, warehouse, and other support personnel.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field.
• Three to five years of experience as a Field Engineer or in a similar role.
• Knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations.
• Actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.

• Ability to read, analyze, and identify discrepancies on engineering plans, specifications, and contract documents.
