Field Engineer
About the Role
Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. Our Norfolk, VA office is seeking a Construction Inspector / Bridge Inspector with 3 to 7 years of heavy construction experience and/or inspection oversight on transportation related projects including but not limited to bridges, culverts, and roadways. The successful Inspector will be a degreed Civil Engineer. As an Inspector you will be working with a professional construction / engineering inspection team that provides consulting services to clients Federal (DoD), State (VDOT), municipal and private clients around the Hampton Roads area. This offer helps to expand our services and enhance our deep client relationships across the Hampton Roads area. We are looking for an individual who has a strong foundation in construction principles, has strong inspection and report writing skills and can assist as an NBIS bridge inspector (or ability and willingness to become) certification when construction oversight is light.
Responsibilities
Construction Inspector:
- Performs inspection of bridges, transportation structures and other structurers during construction to evaluate contractor's method, workmanship, quality and compliance with construction documents (drawings and specifications)
- Evaluates construction materials for quality and compliance with Contract Documents and perform related work such as data collection, report writing and record keeping
- Recognizes basic construction or engineering problems, coordinates problems with the engineer of record; makes field measurements of pay items; checks equipment; maintains comprehensive project records including daily diaries, materials notebooks, as-built plans, pay quantity records, progress schedules, work orders, and monthly estimates
- Frequents external contact with: contractor personnel to schedule and coordinate project inspection, resolve problems and monitor receipt of materials; local government to explain work under construction
- Consults engineers to discuss and resolve field construction issues and to obtain technical guidance in specialty areas of engineering and inspections
- Monitors contractor's operations to ensure compliance with contract drawings and specifications
- Prepares response to contractor's Request for Information (RFI)
- Reviews and processes contractor's shop drawing submittals
NBIS Bridge Inspector:
- Partners with other professionals and departments to gather information for projects
- Works collaboratively with all members of the inspection group
- Conducts inspections and assists in supervision of site investigations as needed
- Prepares or assists in preparation of bridge inspection reports including data entry, writing and photo editing
- Performs checker review of bridge inspection reports by others
- Works collaboratively with members of all company disciplines
- Assists with various project elements including planning, execution and follow-up
- Performs other duties as required
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering or related
- Minimum of an Engineer in Training (EIT) required
- Transportation related construction inspection experience in the United States
- 3 to 7 years of heavy construction experience and/or inspection oversight on transportation related projects. Desired experience includes: bridges, culverts, and/or roadways
- Minimum 2+ years of experience serving as a NBIS Inspector strongly preferred; desired bridge inspection certifications: NHI Certification (NHI-130055) and Refresher (NHI-130053), if applicable
- Inspection experience utilizing special equipment such as snooper/bucket trucks, boats, scaffolding, etc. preferred
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications and standards
- Boater Safety Card preferred
- Valid driver's license in good standing
- Ability and willingness to work in the field 5 days per week Monday - Friday with occasional evenings and weekends. Field hours are project specific and may occasionally require overnight construction inspection as deemed necessary by the project
- Availability and willingness to travel as required. Overnight travel is not expected but may be necessary on a limited basis
- Selected candidate must consent to and pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening
- All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Working Conditions
The work takes place in both the office and the field which may require occasional extended hours, night shifts or weekends to meet project requirements. Inclement weather may occur.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to navigate field and climb as required to inspect bridges and perform inspection of construction. Site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Ability to navigate office and utilize standard office equipment. Attend client meetings and travel as necessary.
Pay
$36.00 to $58.00 per hour based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting the required qualifications in the job description. Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the Virginia market.
