Field Engineer

About the role

The Field Engineer oversees and executes project controls and management across multiple disciplines. Key functions include direct support to Craft Superintendents, quantity collection, scheduling, contract administration, procurement, and project reporting. This role requires interfacing with clients, engineering/design teams, subcontractors, vendors, and project management to ensure project success.

This is a traveling, project-based position requiring up to 100% travel. Projects typically last 8–18 months and may be located anywhere in the U.S. We provide designated per diem, mobilization support (including mileage reimbursement), and one longer weekend every four weeks for additional time at home.

Responsibilities

• Represent the company professionally in all client interactions.
• Provide contract-required reports (weekly, monthly, schedule).
• Follow Corporate Safety Plan and site-specific safety plans.
• Perform quantity calculations by measuring completed/installed materials and work.
• Develop and review work plans and work packages.
• Ensure site quality plans are communicated, inspections are completed, and documentation is assembled for final turnover.
• Manage daily labor timesheets and obtain customer approval.
• Compile and distribute the Average Labor Rate to front-line supervision.
• Train craft and staff employees on completing Job Safety Analysis (JSAs).
• Lead or participate in jobsite safety reviews, toolbox meetings, mass safety meetings, and safety training.
• Order and schedule material deliveries; develop procurement status reports.
• Plan, schedule, and coordinate work groups on the jobsite.
• Perform material takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
• Conduct basic engineering calculations and technical drafting to support field operations.
• Assist engineers in gathering and preparing data for submittals or transmittals to customers, vendors, subcontractors, and governmental agencies.
• Prepare field-issued purchase orders and subcontracts; perform material buyout takeoffs from issued-for-construction drawings.
• Direct home office procurement and subcontract administration functions.
• Provide field support and supervise subcontractor operations.
• Manage project recordkeeping and correspondence, including daily reports, photographs, RFIs, submittals, transmittals, and memorandums.
• Create and monitor project controls such as productivity tracking, indirect scheduling, equipment logs, risk/opportunity logs, etc.
• Maintain the master project schedule.
• Generate change orders and as-built data for Project Manager review.
• Drive the planning process through master schedules, 6-week, 3-week, 1-week, and manpower curves.
• Assist the Project Manager with accounting, job costs, and Work in Progress (WIP) updates.
• Lead the budgeting process by converting estimates to Standard Phase codes.
• Alert Project Manager and Home Office of cost trends (labor, material, subcontractor, equipment).
• Manage cost forecasting for the entire project (labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment).
• Establish cashflow forecasts to ensure positive project cashflow.
• Act as primary company representative in the absence of or as directed by the Project Manager or Project Engineer.
• Understand prime contract provisions, terms, and scope.
• Develop and prepare Schedule of Values and customer invoices.
• Support a crew of up to 50 people for short periods if needed.
• Lead 1–2 Field Engineers and manage portions of the field office staff (engineers, office managers, document control, schedulers, procurement, warehouse, etc.).

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field.
• Three to five years of experience as a Field Engineer or similar role.
• Industrial experience preferred.
• Knowledge of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations.
• Active participation in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
• Ability to read, analyze, and identify discrepancies in engineering plans, specifications, and contract documents.
• Ability to access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments.

Physical Demands

• Work up to 12-hour shifts performing hard physical labor in varying temperatures and outdoor conditions.
• Maintain physical strength and stamina; use arms, hands, and legs fully.
• Push, pull, and frequently lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb as required.
• Perform repetitive tasks continuously for several hours.
• Work in uncontrolled environmental conditions (extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, loud noises).
• Wear personal protective equipment (safety-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.).
• Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
• Work at heights and comply with all safety/fall-protection requirements.
• Evaluate information based on measurable standards; recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings.
• Visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings.
• Maintain good balance and work at heights.
• See and hear well (naturally or with correction).
• Coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.

Schedule

This is a full-time position typically requiring 50 hours per week, subject to project requirements. Travel is required up to 90%, with presence directly on project sites and intermittent travel to your residence.

Pay

Competitive pay ranging from $70,000 to $110,000 per year, with ongoing performance reviews, project completion bonuses, and merit increases.
