Field Engineer

About the role

GDS Associates, Inc. has an exciting and challenging full-time opportunity with advancement and growth potential for a Field Engineer in our Design & Engineering group. This is a remote position based in Texas. As a Field Engineer, you'll design distribution and/or transmission lines that meet client standards and NESC requirements. The position requires travel to client sites for outside field work, including collecting GPS data and pole line data. You will use design software to verify structure and line strength, design overhead and underground distribution lines under the supervision of a project lead, and supervise other staking technicians and associate engineers.

Responsibilities

• Direct contact with clients.
• Develop new clients or expand services to existing clients.
• Manage multiple design projects and schedules.
• Design overhead and underground lines.
• Acquire easements and permits.
• Communicate with construction crews regarding design and post-design inspection.
• Interface with landowners to obtain easements and/or permission for the construction of electric facilities.
• Work independently to meet project schedules.
• Ensure engineering and construction standards are followed, including compliance with client standards and NESC specifications.
• Obtain necessary permits and easements.
• Accurately and neatly gather field data using paper drawings, forms, electronic data collection devices, digital cameras, or other formats/devices specified by the project manager and/or client.
• Prepare construction sketches and complete staking sheets on forms or by use of computer software packages.
• Use pole line design software such as Pole Foreman or PLSCADD.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 1-2 years of experience preferred.
• Ability to identify and gather field data on aerial electric distribution lines and structures using technology such as GPS survey equipment, data collection units, laser range finders, and cameras.
• Ability to perform calculations on distribution structures and lines.
• Ability to engage clients to sell new and/or additional services.
• Flexibility/availability to work extra hours when necessary to meet project requirements.
• Physical ability to cut right-of-way, carry a 10-pound pack several miles, and drive stakes for future pole and anchor placement.
• Proficiency in pole line design software.
• Ability to travel to project sites (travel requirements will vary from 50% to 100%).
• Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the USA (no visa sponsorship available).
