About the Role

The Field Engineer 2 supports construction activities for routine projects, ensuring crew work is performed efficiently. This role completes tasks personally and by supervising a crew as a working foreman, all aligned with JE Dunn’s strategy, vision, and values.

Responsibilities

  • Core Field Engineer – Trade Family:
    • Actively participates in the project-specific safety plan and culture.
    • Demonstrates commitment to an injury-free environment through actions and mentoring.
    • Works with tools and executes self-perform work as part of a craftsmen crew to complete assigned tasks.
    • Learns company best practices and construction techniques through hands-on training.
    • Builds relationships and communication skills with tradespeople and project team members (foremen, journeymen, superintendents, subcontractors).
    • Develops understanding of company functions and support roles contributing to project success.
    • Learns and applies company standards for equipment use in building processes.
    • Collaborates with others and demonstrates teamwork.
    • Incorporates Lean practices into daily activities.
    • Participates in meetings such as weekly work plans as needed.
  • Additional Field Engineer 2 Responsibilities:
    • Plans, executes, and reports self-perform work.
    • Pre-plans crew activities, fulfills daily task plans, completes look-ahead schedules, and provides updates to supervisors.
    • Participates in creating and implementing project safety plans, ensuring compliance through training, toolbox talks, and communication with safety representatives.
    • Helps control costs by improving processes.
    • Ensures quality for assigned tasks by assisting with quality assurance/control activities.
    • Assists with MOC (Material and Other Costs) and equipment analysis.
    • Works on-site with superintendents to monitor crew size, self-perform packaging, and contractor coordination.
    • Participates in punch lists, city inspections, safety/quality reviews, and prepares documentation.
    • Leads or participates in planning meetings (weekly work plans, lookaheads).
    • Coordinates with other company functions to meet project needs.
    • Leads or participates in Lean construction practices (e.g., Last Planner System).
    • Plans sequencing and coordination of all crafts.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform work accurately and timely.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Ability to acquire layout skills.
  • Knowledge of crane flagging and rigging.
  • Understanding of organizational structure and available resources.
  • Knowledge of construction management means and methods.
  • Familiarity with Lean processes and philosophy.
  • Proficiency in JE Dunn construction technology.
  • Ability to apply construction management fundamentals.
  • Knowledge of self-perform and labor productivity.
  • Ability to assess and optimize project productivity.
  • Understanding of specific trades and scopes of work.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of productivity rates.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate internally and externally.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or related field (Preferred).
  • Participation in a federally required training or apprenticeship program (Preferred, location-dependent).
  • Equivalent relevant experience considered in lieu of the above.
  • 2+ years of construction experience (Required).
  • 0-2 years of construction supervision experience (Preferred).
