Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Travel to customer sites and other locations to sort, pack, and remove hazardous chemicals.
  • Transport hazardous materials to Arcwood’s plant for disposal.
  • Perform some office work as required.

Training

The Field Chemist training is a 6-month program. During this period, you will:

  • Work side by side with an experienced Field Chemist to learn the role hands-on.
  • Receive formal training in OSHA standards, RCRA, and DOT regulations, among others.

Qualifications

  • A valid Class B CDL within 6 months of hire.
  • Completion of CDL training on the job within your first few weeks.
  • Education: Associates degree (required); Bachelor’s degree (preferred).
  • Experience: Valid driver's license preferred.
  • Physical ability to perform physically demanding work in variable outdoor conditions.
  • Clean-shaven at all times due to the need to properly don a respirator.

A Day in the Life

  • No two days are the same — the work is physical, fast-paced, and mission-critical.
  • Typical day begins at the Field Office, where you’ll load tools, PPE, and supplies before heading out to one or more project sites.
  • Daily tasks vary and may include cleaning and removing underground chemical storage tanks, preparing waste for disposal, demolition labor at contaminated building and land sites, operating excavation and filter press equipment, handling, loading, unloading, and sampling drums, responding to emergency spill situations as needed, using small hand tools, and providing general construction support.
  • At the end of the day, decontaminate equipment, complete paperwork, and prep for the next assignment.

  • Prioritize health and safety at all times — adhere to all company policies, processes, and safe work practices.
  • Absolutely essential to assist in the segregation of chemicals by hazard class and pack compatible materials in appropriate containers, preparing for transportation; complete necessary paperwork for each job.
  • Absolutely essential to determine and load supplies needed for job completion and travel to various industry, laboratory, and educational sites to perform lab pack services.
  • Absolutely essential to assist in characterizing materials at field project sites.
  • Absolutely essential to adhere to proper placarding and load segregation requirements when transporting hazardous materials.
  • Absolutely essential to appropriately direct Field Technicians / Drivers who are assisting with waste collection.
  • Absolutely essential to maintain an introductory knowledge of high-hazard materials management / assessment and cylinder handling.
