Field Application Engineer

About the role

OPAL-RT Technologies is a leader in real-time simulation, rapid control prototyping (RCP) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing for the design, testing and optimization of control and protection systems used in power grids, power electronics and electrical drives. Our solutions serve industries such as energy, automotive, railways, aeronautics, and R&D centers and universities. Clients include EDF, EADS, DCNS, ABB, GE Energy, Renault, Toyota, General Electric, SNCF, CEA, CERN, and NASA.

This hybrid position is based in Edinburgh and involves providing technical support to OPAL-RT Europe’s customers and internal teams. The role includes regular international travel (1–2 times per month, 2–5 days per trip).

Responsibilities

• After-sales technical support:
  • Handle support tickets from customers.
  • Escalate to level 2 or 3 support and coordinate with the R&D team in Montreal.
  • Monitor ongoing projects with the technical director.
  • Participate in equipment procurement.
  • Define and execute pre-delivery tests.
  • Manage logistics for deliveries.
• Training & Commissioning:
  • Commission systems at customer sites.
  • Provide on-site or remote user training.
• Pre-sales support:
  • Develop hardware and software demonstrators.
  • Conduct product demonstrations at trade fairs and seminars.
  • Perform feasibility studies for prospects.
  • Assist in technical pitches to prospects.
  • Support sales managers in the field.

Requirements

• Diploma in electrical engineering or a related field.
• Experience in modeling complex systems (e.g., electrical conversion, drives, mechatronic systems, control/command); beginners considered based on profile.
• Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink.
• Fluent in English.
