Fiber Technician

About the role

AES is a wholly owned subsidiary of Quanta Services, a leading utility contractor in North America. We specialize in high-voltage substations and have completed projects across North America. Our services are in high demand as the country's electrical infrastructure is being upgraded and expanded.

Responsibilities

• Perform fusion and mechanical splicing of fiber optic cables
• Test and troubleshoot fiber using OTDRs, power meters, and related diagnostic tools
• Read and interpret splicing diagrams, network maps, and construction drawings
• Install enclosures, patch panels, and other fiber components
• Mentor and provide guidance to less-experienced technicians on job sites
• Maintain accurate daily logs, documentation, and test records
• Work closely with project managers and field crews to meet schedules and quality standards
• Follow all company safety practices and site-specific safety requirements
• Travel regularly for project assignments, including overnight stays

Requirements

• 2–3 years of experience in fiber optic installation, splicing, and testing
• Strong understanding of fiber types, color codes, and industry standards
• Proficiency with OTDRs, power meters, VFLs, and related tools
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
• Ability to work outdoors year-round, lift 50+ lbs, and work at heights or in confined spaces
• Strong attention to detail, work ethic, and commitment to safety

Preferred Qualifications

• OSHA 10 and CPR/First Aid certifications
• CDL or willingness to obtain one
• Experience in both underground and aerial fiber construction
• Leadership experience or ability to lead small crews
• Familiarity with GIS tools and digital job tracking platforms (iPads/tablets)
