About the role
The Enterprise Fusion Fiber Splicer is responsible for the installation, termination, and certification of fiber optic cable systems ranging from 2 to 96 strands across various facilities such as data centers, hospitals, schools, and commercial facilities. This role requires a minimum of two years of hands-on experience performing single fiber fusion splicing and connector termination using AFL-Fujikura and Corning Swift fusion splicers, proficiency with Fluke loss testers and Fluke OTDR testers, and working knowledge of mechanical and anaerobic splicing methods.
Responsibilities
- Perform single fiber fusion splicing on inside plant fiber optic cables ranging from 2 to 96 strands, including fiber stripping, cleaving, and splice protection sleeve installation using AFL-Fujikura and Corning Swift single strand fusion splicers.
- Terminate fiber optic connectors directly to cable strands using fusion splicing as the primary method, with working knowledge of mechanical and anaerobic splicing techniques for emergency or situational applications.
- Install and organize fiber splice enclosures when joining two cables together, managing splice tray layout, fiber routing, bend radius compliance, and labeling per manufacturer recommendations.
- Terminate fiber assemblies to patch panels with proper routing and bend radius management, verifying end face quality via inspection microscopy prior to connector mating.
- Test and certify completed fiber links using Fluke loss testers and Fluke OTDR testers, verifying splice loss values and total link insertion loss against project specifications.
- Interpret OTDR traces to diagnose and resolve fiber faults including high-loss splices, damaged connectors, and cable breaks, pinpointing fault locations along the fiber span.
- Maintain complete project documentation including splice loss records, OTDR traces, as-built cable records, and corrective action logs for data center, healthcare, education, and commercial facility installations.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience performing single fiber fusion splicing on inside plant fiber optic cables in data center, healthcare, education, or commercial environments.
- Experience with fiber stripping, cleaving, end face inspection, and connector termination via fusion splicing, with working knowledge of mechanical and anaerobic splicing methods.
- Hands-on experience operating AFL-Fujikura and/or Corning Swift single strand fusion splicers.
- Proficiency in fiber optic testing and certification using Fluke loss testers and Fluke OTDR testers, with the ability to interpret results, identify faults, and document findings against project specifications.
- Working knowledge of fiber splice enclosure installation and organization per manufacturer recommendations.
- Familiarity with industry standards and safety protocols.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Experience
- Industry certification from FOA, ETA International, or BICSI in fiber optic installation and/or splicing (CFOT, CFOS/S, FOI, or Installer 2 Optical Fiber).
- Manufacturer-specific training or certification on AFL-Fujikura or Corning Swift fusion splicing equipment.
- BICSI Technician or Installer certification.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to work on ladders and use power tools; ability to lift/carry/setup a 50-pound box or ladder.
- Must own low voltage tools, snips, cable strippers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.
- Ability to work 2nd or 3rd shift and overtime as needed and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Must pass 7-year criminal background check and pre-employment physical and drug screen.
- Must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and current automobile insurance.
