About the role

The Field Technician II - Fiber Optics is responsible for stringing, maintaining, and repairing fiber optic cable, including pulling, tensioning, stranding, and spacing lines. This role involves troubleshooting, terminating, splicing, documenting, and testing fiber optic cables to meet customer needs and ensure operational efficiency. Work is performed in communications and power spaces, often at heights or in confined spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Safely perform work in communications and energized spaces
  • Participate in pole climbing and work from elevated positions using bucket trucks
  • Operate basic hand tools (cordless drill, hammer, wrench, socket set) and recognize safety hazards
  • Remove old hardware from poles and install new equipment
  • Provide safety spotting, roadway flagging support, and obtain Flagger Certification
  • Manage worksite housekeeping and equipment inspections
  • Perform minor field repairs on equipment
  • Strip, cleave, terminate, and test fiber optic cables
  • Stay updated with industry-standard coding for fiber optics
  • Proficiently use fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR, traffic identifiers, light-source power meters, and fiber-specific hand tools
  • Utilize proper methods for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cables
  • Read and execute network drawings and splicing diagrams
  • Compute basic math calculations and take measurements
  • Work indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditions
  • Lift up to 65 pounds without assistance and carry/extend ladders weighing up to 65 pounds
  • Climb poles and work at heights of up to 60 feet

Requirements

  • 2-4 years of relevant fiber optics experience preferred
  • Ability to identify independent colors and learn color codes
  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • Experience with ladders, bucket trucks, cable pullers, and reel stands preferred
  • Small equipment experience (e.g., forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer) preferred
  • Flagger Certification preferred
  • Comfortable working at elevated heights and in confined spaces
  • Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision
  • Ability to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truck
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to implement best practices
  • Verbal and written communication skills with professionalism
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, and Visio
  • Completion of a thorough background and pre-employment drug/alcohol screening
  • Participation in random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug/alcohol testing
