Responsibilities

• String and maintain fiber optic cable, including pulling, tensioning, stranding, and spacing lines.
• Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair fiber lines.
• Perform new cable installs, removals, modifications, and repairs in outside plant locations, including telephone poles, underground services, and conduit.
• Terminate, splice, document, and test fiber optic cables to meet customer needs and maximize operating efficiency.
• Work within communications and power spaces, supporting operational efficiency improvements.
• Safely perform work in communications spaces and energized environments.
• Participate in pole climbing when necessary.
• Operate basic hand tools (e.g., cordless drill, hammer, wrench, socket set).
• Identify general safety hazards and electrical-specific hazards, such as missing or degraded parts and hardware.
• Work from elevated positions in bucket trucks.
• Assist in removing old hardware from poles and installing new hardware.
• Provide safety spotting and roadway flagging support, including obtaining Flagger Certification.
• Manage worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspections.
• Perform minor field repairs on equipment.
• Conduct cable stripping, cleaving, terminating, and testing.
• Stay up to date with industry-standard coding for fiber optics.
• Proficiently use fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR (optical time domain reflectometer), traffic identifiers, light-source power meters, and fiber-specific hand tools.
• Utilize proper methods and procedures for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cables.

Requirements

• 2-4 years of relevant fiber optics experience preferred.
• Ability to identify independent colors and learn color codes.
• Valid Driver’s License required.
• Experience with equipment such as ladders, bucket trucks, cable pullers, and reel stands preferred.
• Small equipment experience preferred (e.g., forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer).
• Flagger Certification preferred.
• Comfortable working at elevated heights and in confined spaces.
• Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision.
• Ability to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truck.
• Apply technical expertise, evaluate problems, and implement best practices.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with professionalism.
• Compute basic math calculations and take measurements.
• Read and execute network drawings and splicing diagrams.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, and Visio.

Working Conditions

• Walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
• Reach with hands and arms, climb ladders and stairs, crawl, and kneel.
• Climb poles, carry, set up, and extend ladders weighing up to 65 pounds.
• Work confidently on ladders and utility poles at heights of up to 60 feet in communications spaces.
• Work indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditions.
• Able to walk long distances.
• Able to lift up to 65 pounds without assistance.
