Fiber Artist & Farmer Residency

About the role

A Wrinkle in Thyme Farm is a woman-owned and operated farm seeking to empower and collaborate with emerging female fiber artists and farmers. The residency is a dynamic program that enhances and nurtures the artist and future farmer from the ground up, focusing on collaboration, learning, and experimentation.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with the farm’s artist to explore a variety of creative genres including felting, dyeing, botanical printing, knitting, spinning, and more.
• Collaborate with the farm manager to learn and take responsibility for managing a farm and caring for a flock of sheep.
• Teach workshops and contribute to the creative conversation.
• Participate in a local weekly farmer’s market, helping run the booth and selling your own creations.
• Attend and help at least one major agricultural fair.
• Learn farm and flock management with Mary Ann.
• Create a legacy project with A Wrinkle in Thyme Farm.
• Live on the farm and experience the farming lifestyle.
• Connect with a larger artist and farmer community through visiting artists, workshops, field trips, and connections.

Requirements

• Passion for natural fiber and the art it involves.
• Curiosity for learning and experimentation.
• Openness to collaboration.
• Self-motivated to create a body of work in the fiber arts of your choice.
• Good communication skills.
• Kind, respectful, and responsible.
• Goal-driven in your career with creative ideas for time spent in residency.
• Ability to work independently and on a team.

Qualifications

• Emerging fiber artist with enough practice and skill to teach classes, contribute to the creative conversation, and showcase work.
• Interest or curiosity for the beautiful sheep that make fiber arts possible.
• Interest in learning about restorative farm management practices and animal husbandry.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds and maneuver around a farm with ease.

Skills

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in the fiber arts and be open to learning new techniques and collaborating with others.

Benefits

• Approximately 20 hours a week of dedicated solo studio time.
• One day a week of learning, collaboration, production, and experimentation with artist Marty Elkin in the studio.

• Mostly private housing with wifi, storage, shared kitchen and bath, and easy access to the studio space below.
• Moderate monthly stipend in exchange for an average of 15 hours per week of farm work.
• Access to community meals, farm-grown meat and vegetables as harvested.
