About the role

TxDOT Galveston-Bolivar Ferry Operations is seeking a safety-oriented Ferryboat Engineer who values personal time while contributing to the maritime operation.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes reports of malfunctions or abnormal conditions affecting vessel stability or operational capability and determines corrective action.
  • Directs vessel refueling operations and discharges of raw sewage and bilge wastewater in compliance with safety regulations and pollution control acts.
  • Inspects and conducts operational tests of emergency generators, firefighting and dewatering pumps, and other equipment; operates and secures equipment under emergency conditions.
  • Maintains a safe and effective working environment by leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others; participating in emergency drills and exercises.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, electrical diagrams, and mechanical drawings; records daily log of watch activities, machinery and equipment statistics; maintains repair records.
  • Ensures proper line-up, start, operation, and securing of all main propulsion, steering, auxiliary, standby machinery and equipment and related systems for vessel operation under normal and/or emergency conditions.
  • Serves as a liaison during American Bureau of Shipping and U.S. Coast Guard inspections and boat drills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent.
  • Experience: 8 years in repair, maintenance, and operation of marine equipment.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license; USCG MMC of Lic-Chf Eng-Mtr Fe-5000Hp Transp Worker ID Cred - TWIC at time of application.

Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of: Pollution prevention and abatement programs, emergency response procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of: Applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Expert skill in: Correcting abnormal operation of equipment, machinery, and systems, first aid and lifesaving techniques, fire fighting.
  • Proficient skill in: Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Ability to: Work in cramped spaces, perform medium work, lift up to 50 lbs., climb, stand, walk, kneel, crawl, push, pull, grasp, talk, hear, use close visual acuity, operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment, determine work quality, make general observations, and maintain a safe and effective working relationship with others.

Skills

  • Knowledge of: Marine equipment, emergency response procedures, public relations, and safety protocols.
