Fernley High Sports Med Teacher/Athletic Trainer Half Time 2026/27

Range: $50,761-$92,279 annually with employer-paid retirement, dependent upon previous experience. Terms of employment: 9 months (185/189 days). FLSA status: exempt.

About the Role

The certified athletic trainer will implement daily student instruction based on the Nevada Academic Content State Standards and Lyon County School District approved curriculum. This role involves creating and maintaining an educational atmosphere that encourages effective student learning, supporting school and district programs and goals, and adhering to LCSD Professional Standards for Licensed Employees. The athletic trainer (ATC) will aid in the prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, administer emergency care, and teach the state-approved Exercise Science/Sports Medicine class.

Responsibilities

• Administer district curriculum aligned with Nevada State Standards and/or Common Core State Standards.
• Ensure all students learn in a respectful environment and maintain a positive, orderly, and academically focused instructional setting.
• Develop and implement effective lessons using the LCSD lesson plan template.
• Analyze student progress and provide individualized instruction and feedback.
• Ensure compliance with special services such as IEPs and other related mandates.
• Provide classroom management and discipline to ensure safety.
• Actively contribute to the School Performance Plan (SPP) process.
• Ensure compliance with assessment regulations and guidelines.
• Facilitate an effective advisory program as outlined by administration and/or district.
• Handle stress and interact professionally with administration, staff, parents, and the community.
• Integrate technology into instructional programs, curriculum, and lessons.
• Maintain accurate and timely records in the student software system (e.g., Infinite Campus).
• Organize and operate the training room.
• Prevent and treat athletic injuries, maintaining accurate records of injuries and rehabilitation.
• Maintain communication with coaches, physicians, and parents regarding athlete injuries.
• Work with coaches on training, diet, and stretching exercises.
• Control and distribute training supplies, coordinating purchases with the Athletic Director.
• Attend all home athletic events; travel to away events is optional (varsity games take precedence).
• Ensure proper measures are taken for handling blood and other certifications.
• Demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide instruction in a secondary classroom.
• Guide the learning process toward achievement of curriculum and student goals.
• Establish and communicate clear expectations for lessons, units, and projects.
• Employ a variety of instructional techniques aligned with objectives to meet student needs.
• Participate as a collaborative member of faculty and staff.
• Maintain accurate records as required by law and district policy.
• Improve professional competence through continued education and in-service training.
• Communicate professionally in written, oral, and non-verbal terms.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Nevada teaching license issued by the Nevada Department of Education, certified in the relevant subject area.
• Certified training in prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
• Certified in handling pathogenic materials.
• Healthcare Provider Certification or equivalent.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods.
• Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit, and stand for long periods.
• Dexterity and coordination to handle files, paper, and occasional lifting of materials.
• Reaching for items above and below waist and head level, including bending, squatting, and stooping.
• Manual dexterity and cognitive ability to operate educational technology (e.g., LCD projector, SmartBoard, tablets).
• Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
• Light lifting (up to 25 pounds) may occasionally be required.

Working Conditions

• Exposure to climate-controlled classrooms and outside weather conditions (mild to extreme temperatures).
• Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud on occasional to frequent time periods.
• Work in crowded environments.
• Potential hazards include classroom furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals, and power/hand-operated machinery.

Schedule

Teachers contracted days (185/189 days per year). Athletic events may occasionally occur on weekends or non-contracted days, with time allocation balanced throughout the year.
