Female Detention Deputies

About the Role

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs skilled professional law enforcement work in the administration and proper functioning of the County Jail, including processing, supervising, and general care of prisoners. The work involves an element of personal danger, and the employee must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Maintains security and order in the jail, including random cell searches and ensuring all doors and locks are working.
• Books all incoming prisoners: interviews to obtain pertinent information, completes arrest forms, searches prisoners, secures personal property, issues jail clothing, takes photographs and fingerprints.
• Logs jail activities and completes incident reports.
• Receives and supervises all visitors and attorneys at the jail.
• Assists in supervising the daily activities of prisoners, including mealtimes, medications, communications, and general care.
• Ensures the jail area is kept clean, directing prison inmates on cleanup activities.
• Maintains catwalks, supply cabinets, and janitor rooms in clean and orderly condition.
• Manages booking files, including taking photos and ensuring records are up to date and properly stored.
• Accepts fees or payments for bonding purposes, issues receipts, and keeps records of transactions.
• Transports prisoners to and from court hearings, medical facilities, detox, other jails, or juveniles to shelter care as directed.
• Receives training in applicable laws, ordinances, and law enforcement principles and procedures.
• Maintains accurate and current records of all prisoners in custody and prepares required reports.
• May serve as a bailiff during criminal trials and hearings, maintaining courtroom order and managing prisoners.
• May serve as a lead worker, perform preliminary breath tests, and operate an inmate command and funding program.
• Performs any other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Ability to exhibit mature judgment, imagination, initiative, and problem-solving capability in dealing with prisoners.
• Ability to deal with prisoners and the public with tact and impartiality.
• Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing factual reports.
• Good physical condition.
• Ability to drive an automobile safely and efficiently; possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, law enforcement agencies, and the public.
• Ability to meet necessary special requirements and provide truthful testimony in court.

Pay

This position starts at $29.30/hour with advancement up to $38.99/hour, depending on qualifications.
