The South Carolina Department of Agriculture is hiring a Feed Control Official for the upstate region. As a Feed Control Official, Your Duties Will Include:

  • Inspection of commercial animal feed firms, including manufacturers, processors, storage facilities, distributors, and retailers for compliance with the South Carolina Commercial Feed Act.
  • Conduct inspections and investigations for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under contract and cooperative agreement for compliance with federal laws.
  • Collect and document commercial animal feed samples with delivery to appropriate laboratory for analysis in accordance with Program procedures.
  • Aid in label review and registration of commercial animal feed to ensure products observed in distribution are compliant with the South Carolina Commercial Feed Act.
  • Assist in follow-up compliance inspections of feed manufacturers, processors, storage facilities, distributors and retailers for compliance with the South Carolina Commercial Feed Act and applicable regulations.
  • Investigate consumer complaints and issue written report of findings.
  • Follow-up on stop sales, recalls, and recall effectiveness checks to ensure adulterated or misbranded products have been withdrawn/removed from distribution.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in natural or physical sciences, agriculture, public health, or related field.
  • A bachelor’s degree in another field of study or associate’s degree in another field of study with additional equivalent work experience may be substituted for the required bachelor’s degree with approval from State Division of Human Resources.
  • A valid state driver's license and ability to operate a motorized vehicle.
  • Ability to complete and pass a federal background check to become credentialed with the FDA within one year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in animal science.
  • Knowledge of feed industry regulations, data collection, tracking, recordkeeping, and analysis.
  • Two (2) years' of directly related experience or three (3) years' experience in related regulatory aspects of commercial animal feed.
  • Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) training.
  • Experience developing and conducting outreach and regulatory education.

Additional Comments

  • Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with various audiences and prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports.
  • Must work effectively in a transparent, team-oriented environment and prepare reports and written correspondence with accurate technical regulatory verbiage.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders and repeatedly lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and lift for prolonged periods in extreme heat and cold.
  • Ability to exercise judgement in applying and interpreting policies, procedures, rules and regulations, be detail oriented, and highly organized.
  • Ability to read fine print on commercial animal feed product labels.
  • Extensive in-state day travel using a state-provided vehicle. Occasional overnight and/or out-of-state travel required.
