Responsibilities

  • Understand welding procedures and parameters; comprehend and utilize blueprints, sketches, drawings, technical manuals, gouge, and work process instructions.
  • Weld steel plates and pipes in the repair and/or construction of marine vessels, industrial components, and associated equipment.
  • Use various types of welding equipment for different types of metal.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Perform related tasks such as cutting and grinding.
  • Repair broken or cracked parts, fill holes, and increase the size of metal parts.
  • Weld metal parts using gas welding, brazing, arc welding, wire fed welding, or TIG welding processes.
  • Select and set up welding equipment, execute planned welds, and examine welds to ensure they meet standards or specifications.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, some college or technical school certification, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six months to one year of experience.
  • Must pass an ABS, ASME, or AWS weld test (2G+3G+4G for plate welding).
  • Capable of welding SMAW & FCAW on plate/structural with ABS Q2+4G or ASME/AWS plate test.

Working Conditions

  • Open-air conditions: noisy, hot, cold, etc.
  • Must be able to stand and operate equipment for up to four continuous hours.
  • Required PPE: hearing, eye, and head protection.
  • Climbing (up to 100 feet or higher) and lifting (up to 50 lbs.).
  • Work with hot and sometimes hazardous materials.
  • Work on inland and offshore barges or in industrial settings.
  • Enter confined spaces such as round manholes with inside diameters of 18”.
  • Traverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights.

Necessary Equipment Operation

  • Blow torches, motorized cutting torches, pattern cutting torches, welding torches.
  • Gas welding, brazing, or cutting apparatus (e.g., brazing equipment, Heliarc welding equipment, oxyacetylene equipment, portable gas-operated arc welders).
  • Manlift or personnel lift (e.g., hydraulic truck lifts, swing stages).
  • Welding masks (e.g., hand shields, welding shields).

Welder Classifications

  • Plate Welder 2nd Class (PLW2): Capable of welding SMAW or FCAW on plate/structural with ABS Q2+4G or ASME/AWS plate test (2G+3G+4G).
  • Plate Welder 1st Class (PLW1): Capable of welding SMAW & FCAW on plate/structural with ABS Q2+4G or ASME/AWS plate test (2G+3G+4G).
  • Pipe Welder 2nd Class (PPW2): Capable of welding SMAW or FCAW on plate/structural & SMAW or FCAW on pipe with ABS Q3 or AWS 6G pipe test.
  • Pipe Welder 1st Class (PPW1): Capable of welding SMAW & FCAW and/or GTAW on pipe. Must pass ABS Q3 or ASME 6G or AWS 6G pipe test.
  • Combination Welder 1st Class (PPLW): Capable of process/structural pipe and plate welding using GTAW+FCAW and/or GTAW+SMAW.
  • Combination Welder 2nd Class (PPLW): Capable of process/structural pipe and plate welding using GTAW+FCAW and/or GTAW+SMAW.
