About the role
The Parent Educator plays a crucial role in ensuring quality services are provided to families, especially during crisis situations. They must maintain compliance with established program standards and adhere to best practices.
Responsibilities
- Outreach and recruitment of participants for classes, including efforts to minimize attrition.
- Establishing and maintaining a trusting and professional working relationship with families through regular personal visits.
- Administering intake, assessments, and screening tools to clients and family members.
- Utilizing intake and assessment results to establish and implement goals, objectives, and activities for parents.
- Recording all group and individualized services and activities in a complete, concise, and timely manner using program forms into PEIRS (DFPS) and Salesforce software.
- Maintaining a weekly meeting with the Program Director to evaluate the status of families on the caseload.
- Applying knowledge of parent-child interaction, child development, and dynamics of child abuse/neglect to teach positive parenting and non-violent child management techniques.
- Reducing participant stress by helping them learn problem-solving and coping skills using strength-based and solution-focused communication strategies.
- Maintaining familiarity and knowledge of community resources and using these appropriately to meet the needs of families and enhance support systems for fathers.
- Observing participants/families for signs that they may need advanced support and making referrals to and participating in crisis teams.
- Aiding participants/families with paperwork needed for programs such as medical or financial assistance.
- Conducting community outreach to educate parents, professionals, and others about the program and agency services, as well as child abuse prevention awareness.
- Maintaining confidential individual files for assigned participants.
- Other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in a Health and Human Services related field.
- Required: At least 3 years related direct service experience with a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: A bachelor’s degree will substitute for experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Maintain current licenses and certificates required for the position, including but not limited to: First Aid, CPR, etc.
- Pass a pre-employment drug screen and random drug screens.
- Maintain emotional control and professional composure at all times.
- Provide proof of work eligibility status upon request.
- Pass a pre-employment and biennial criminal background and motor vehicle check (fingerprints needed if applicant has lived out of state within the past 5 years).
- Demonstrate the ability to respond sensitively and competently to the service population’s cultural and socio-economic characteristics.
- Communicate effectively in writing and verbally in English.
- Work in a fast-paced environment.
- Maintain computer literacy required to meet the responsibilities of the position.
- Work effectively and without intensive supervision both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Manage time effectively and efficiently.
