Farrowing Specialist

About the Role

As a Farrowing Specialist at Schwartz Farms, Inc., you will perform daily duties associated with farrowing production, ensuring the well-being of sows and piglets while upholding the company’s values of humility, care, integrity, discipline, and excellence. Responsibilities

• Assist the Department Leader with preparation of pre-farrow rooms.
• Perform inducing of sows and ensure proper farrowing execution.
• Provide day-one pig care and identify piglets requiring a nurse sow or litter swap.
• Assist in ensuring piglets are with the correct sow and crate; transfer and size piglets as directed.
• Move animals (sows and piglets) as directed and treat/vaccinate them per protocol.
• Keep crates full of lactating sows and process/castrate piglets.
• Feed lactating sows according to protocol.
• Maintain accurate documentation, including weekly and monthly inventory of sows and piglets.
• Assist in power washing as assigned.
• Advocate for and engage in SFI’s animal welfare policy, promoting well-being and reporting mistreatment.
• Ensure compliance with SFI training programs, procedures, and bio-security policies.
• Maintain PQA certification status.
• Uphold a safe work environment and safe work practices.
• Follow bio-security protocols and maintain general barn cleanliness, including farrowing rooms and hallways.
• Adjust heat lamps and report ventilation concerns to the Department Leader.
• Perform maintenance tasks as assigned.
• Demonstrate Schwartz Farms’ values of integrity, respect, excellence, and adaptability.
• Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements

• Capable of lifting a minimum of 50 lbs. with reasonable accommodation.
• Willingness to work weekend and holiday rotations as established by the supervisor.
