Farmworker Health with Maine Mobile Health Program, Various Locations

Elective Details

To provide the GME learner with clinical experience in a rural Migrant Agricultural Worker Primary Care, this elective is designed for PGY-2 or above.

Duration

The duration for this elective is either 2 or 4 weeks.

Rotation Director

The rotation director for this elective is Cheryl Seymour, MD.

Learning Objectives

• Be exposed to the unique challenges and rewards of providing medical care for migrant and seasonal farmworkers
• Gain an in-depth understanding of the social, political, occupational, cultural and community factors that influence the health of migrant and seasonal farmworkers
• Reflect on their role as physician and advocate as it relates to this marginalized community or others with whom they may work in the future
• Provide acute and primary care for migrant and seasonal farmworkers as part of an interdisciplinary team in a mobile medical unit setting
• Participate in post-clinic interdisciplinary team debriefs to prioritize and plan the logistics of clinical care plans
• Engage in discussion and reflection with other learners and experienced MMHP providers around the clinical, ethical and structural challenges inherent in providing health care to marginalized communities

• Broccoli: July – October – Aroostook County
• Blueberries: July – August – Washington County / Downeast
• Apples: September – October – Androscoggin & Oxford counties
• Wreathing: November – December – Washington County / Downeast

The Maine Mobile Health Program coordinates housing for the entire field team. The specific site will depend on the time of year and where the farmworker communities are located.
