FARMS Program Student Intern (9035)

About the role

The FARMS Program is an agricultural best management practices (BMPs) cost-share reimbursement program focused on water conservation and water quality. The successful candidate will assist FARMS Project Managers with program activities and projects related to water resources and agricultural operations within the Southwest Florida Water Management District (District). This part-time internship extends multiple semesters while the candidate remains enrolled in school and offers the opportunity to learn about many aspects of the District’s mission.

All work will be conducted in-office or in the field; remote work is not eligible for this position. The intern may choose to work out of the District's Sarasota office.

Responsibilities

  • Compile and review data from established databases, maps, and publications
  • Assist with data analysis of FARMS project performance
  • Manage various Access databases
  • Construct ArcPRO maps for project presentations
  • Assist with outreach to the agricultural community
  • Attend field visits to projects and potential projects
  • Gain an understanding of how the District’s regulatory function impacts the agricultural community
  • Perform queries from the FARMS and District’s Regulatory database

Working Conditions

  • Most work is conducted in a standard office environment
  • Requires the ability to perform continuous repetitive tasks (including keyboarding) with one or both hands
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds
  • Must be able to operate a District vehicle for two hours or more at a time
  • May be exposed to extremes in temperature and humidity, as well as pests such as mosquitoes and ticks

Requirements

  • Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Be at least part-time and currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or other recognized educational or vocational program
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students or minimum GPA of 3.0 for graduate students
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Microsoft Office skills, including proficiency with Excel
  • Ability to work well on a team and take on individual project assignments
  • Preferred degree fields: Agricultural Sciences, Agribusiness, Hydrology, Natural Sciences, or Engineering
  • Preferred degree level: Undergraduate

Pay

$16.00 hourly

Schedule

  • Part-time, typically no more than 25 hours per week
  • Position extends multiple semesters as long as the candidate remains enrolled in school
  • Work location: Sarasota, FL office

Travel

Some travel within the District's coverage area using a District vehicle is required.
