Farm Technician

About the role

The Farm Technician works within the farming team to improve the growing conditions of research and production crops. They assist with daily farming operations and support all farm activities including ground prep, planting, irrigation, and pesticide applications.

Responsibilities

• Assists the Farm Manager with the day-to-day operation of the farm.
• Records seasonal data relating to crop maps, fertilizer, irrigation, and overall growing season performance for each crop.
• Ensures that the irrigation systems are maintained and operated correctly.
• Troubleshoots drip systems and independently determines repair needs if necessary.
• Performs pesticide applications (spraying, chemigation or hand applications) and maintains complete spray records, documentation, and posting requirements, as required by law.
• Tracks, determines, and performs fertilizer applications in the field and greenhouses.
• Works with and directs the work of contract labor crews.
• Performs preventative maintenance of farm equipment as needed.
• Aids in harvesting, deseeding, and post-harvest activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• 5+ years of practical hands-on farming experience.
• Maintain a current pesticide applicator's license (PAC), or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, B.S. in agriculture or related subject, or equivalent knowledge and experience as determined by Sakata.

Skills

• Knowledge of farm equipment operation – tractor, sprayers, disc, mulcher, etc.
• Irrigation Management
• Pesticide Application
• General knowledge of farm operations and management principles.
• English speaking
• Ability to work under strict time constraints and requirements.
• Excellent record keeping skills.
